1997 Vauxhall Corsa B Twist
I was looking for a cheap car to race it one day. First I looked at junior series in rallying, then I thought I might as well wait until I’m 16 and can get a race license. So I bought this Corsa, for £140. I had a look at it, saw the dent in the boot lid, mayo under the oil cap, and the smell was disgousting. The engine and gearbox were covered in oil, but I didn’t know much about cars back then. I took it. It was running at least, and I wanted a car to work on. I can’t drive yet anyway… So my dad drove it home, and surprise! The boot doesn’t open! I folded down the rear seats, and the amount of rubbish in there was ridiculous. I reached in with a massive flathead screwdriver, and popped it open. It required a special technique though.
So there I was, with a car, at 15 years old, and parents thinking I was crazy (although they helped me fund the car). The first thing I did, was strip down the interior, with the tools I could find. Other tools I bought along the way. Then I planned to rebuild the original 1.2 8v engine so I started stripping it down.
Now, the boot lid is blue (and opens), I have 2 sets of alloys, has the interior fully stripped, a 1.4 16v engine (not running yet, but I’m getting there slowly), has a roll cage which needs fitting, has bonnet pins, has a circuit breaker which needs wiring up, a polycarbonate sun roof, perspex front windows, bucket seat that needs fitting and the respray has started. There is a lot of work still to go into this thing!
Although my family thinks I’m crazy, and many people don’t believe that I will get anywhere with it, I’m really determined and I know that I will be racing. The plan is now 2016, in the Welsh Saloons and Sports Cars Championship. If you know anyone who might be interested in a sponsorship, let me know!
