1953 Triumph Mayflower
Reg, HK 174. The Mayflower was the ‘little sister’ of the Renowned, commonly known as The Razor Edge.
Best thing about this car, the seats, like two comfy sofas. The attention it got was ridiculous, only people over 60 seemed to know what it was & then they’d want to tell you about once seeing one when the Doctor or Headmaster drove down their street. More than once idiots told me it was a small Rolls Royce.
The almost 1200cc 3 cylinder side value engine, produced almost no power. 3 forward gears & a column shift stick behind steering wheel took a while to get used to. The brakes were hopeless, even when replaced, using gears & handbrake saved car many times when people pulled out in front of me, assumed I’d slow down.
If you did over 30mph around a corner it would side off the road thanks to the narrow radial tyres.
When it needed exhaust replacing, discovered Ford Fiesta MK1 pipe was a perfect fit.
Was going to spend time & money restoring to factory standard but discovered that even in showroom condition they were worth just £1500, which is what I’d already invested, buying it, MOTing it & fixing rotten door bottoms.
Ran it for 18 months as my daily.
