If you’re pouring lots of heart and soul into working on a car, a few late nights here and there are inevitable, and anyone that’s tried to wrench or hammer into the night knows what a pain it can be when the daylight fades. Sometimes, your overhead light just isn’t going to cut it, and let’s face it, nobody needs to be faffing around with a torch while simultaneously trying to get a particularly stubborn bolt dislodged.

A decent source of light is a must for all the garage night owls out there, then, and we don’t think they come much better than Clarke’s UBL1600R Rechargeable Under Car Bonnet LED Light.

This thing kicks out up to 1600 lumens of light, and, if you’re not up to speed on your lumens, that’s a lot – roughly double what your average 60W household lightbulb manages. That brightness is adjustable, so if you don’t need the full 1600lm, you can turn it down and extend the battery life.

It spans your whole engine bay, too, bringing light no matter how dark the surroundings may be. That’s thanks to its removable rubber-coated hooks, designed to allow it to neatly slot onto your open bonnet, and mounted on a telescopic frame to make it suitable for any width of car. What’s more, the light unit rotates 360 degrees, with the hooks doubling up as feet, so you can also use it for under-car illumination or even as a free-standing light – useful in power cuts and other emergency situations.

The UBL1600R comes supplied with a 230V charger, allowing the integrated battery to be charged in as little as 90 minutes, and there’s even a magnetised section for storing small metal tools or bolts and washers while you work. So, the UBL1600R is lightweight, bright, handy and versatile. As workshop lights go, it seems that Clarke has thought of everything!
