When do you need over 700bhp in your Saloon??

The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has never been classed as a slouch in any stretch of the imagination. Ever since the W212 model first hit the market it has had over 500bhp from factory, first in a naturally aspirated 6.2 V8 guise and then from around 2012 it has been fitted with the M157 5.5 bi-turbo lump producing upto 557bhp.

But as we have come to learn, the AMG owners are like junkies and are often still left wanting that next fix of power. The M157 engine is ripe for tuning with AMG leaving a lot on the table when in standard form. Even a simple stage 1 remap will see the power jump to around 640bhp and is one of our most popular upgrades on these cars.

Then you get those clients that want the next step. Stage 2.

Stage 2 consists of fitting decatted downpipes and further adjustment of the software to take into account the removal of the restriction and engines ability to get rid of those exhaust gases more efficiently. Sound is also an important factor to AMG ownership and there was certainly a loss of ‘edge’ when switching from the NA to the turbo engine. That however is no longer a problem with the fitment of the downpipes and the beast is definitely unleashed again!

The E63 AMG at Stage 2 level wants to devour the dyno whole, in one bite..........

Testing out the changes and making sure all is functioning well requires the E63 to be strapped to the 2000bhp Capable Dyno and run at quite frankly ridiculous speeds when only 5 feet from a brick wall. Anchors in and strapped on the beast is given a short settling run to ensure it sits perfectly straight on the rolls. Final securing completed and it is time to unleash hell! The car is run up until it is in 4th and just below 2000rpm…. then a final ‘Hail Mary’ said and the accelerator is floored. The sound that follows can only be described as a Chietan Tank/747 Airplane hybrid taking off. All the time the rev counter climbing at an extraordinary rate until the run completes and power is let off.

The result a staggering 710bhp and 1100NM at the crank. (Although strictly speaking we should give figures in WHP, wheelhorsepower) so 618whp and 963NM for those that need it….

So just for reference that is + 192bhp + 400NM gains over the factory quoted figures for a 2012 Bi Turbo car.

So that £35k secondhand E63 Bi-turbo on Autotrader looks pretty tempting no?

When there’s a tesla model s standing next to you on a traffic light trying to rev… But then you show it how to rev an engine and leave it in smoke. That’s the one and only reason..:
