A Tuning Company Will 'Fix' The Land Rover Discovery's Offset Plate For You

A few months ago, Land Rover designer Gerry McGovern claimed that the ‘problem’ with the new Discovery’s rear-end lies with the kind of number plates being fitted.

Yep, he blamed the larger plates - complete with GB/EU emblem - being fitted by dealers in the UK for making the back of the SUV look weird; not the quirky offset placement. Having mocked up a car with slimmer plates in Photoshop at the time, we remained unconvinced and a little bemused.

Now though, there’s a much more convincing fix from a German tuning company called Startech. Its solution? To reposition the plate to the middle where it arguably should have been all along. Or, as the firm excitedly puts it, the “Discovery of symmetry!” Chortle.

It’s all thanks to a neat little insert, available from January 2018 for a very reasonable €809.20. Take a look at the image above - it’s a massive improvement, no?

Well, this is new: a tuner that doesn’t make an SUV look garish and ugly for once.

Lol, someone would need to be commissioned to build the other one from scratch! This is a S1000RR, am I correct? It seems asymmetrical design is a thing on BMW bikes.

Google “Karl Dall”.
It’s a German celebrity, whom BMW pays homage to with that front.
Look at Mr. Dall’s face and you’ll understand.

Hilarious, only people with a bad case of OCD would do this.
Many vehicles in the past have had offset plate mounts and no one complained…

The offset suits the Discovery, if you ask me. Kind of like a good ID trait.

I like the offset look. Modern cars are too darn symmetrical.
