Saab 900 Turbo - A car made for the nordic conditions. Front-wheel car with double wishbone suspension at the front and 5-linked beam axle at the rear. The engine is longitudinal mounted, which is unusual for a FWD car, the engine is also slanted and mounted backwards, that means the clutch is faced forwards to the grille. The power-delivery is transferred via three primary chains, so technically this car is chain driven and has primary gearing like a sportsbike. This makes it very easy to change gear ratios and clutch-change can be done within 30 minutes without seperating the gearbox and engine. The gearbox-design is also unique, since its both the oilpan for the engine and houses the gears and differential, but still have seperate oilsumps.

The 2-liter inline-4 16valve engine has a factoryfitted watercooled Mitsubishi turbocharger, the engine management system and ignition has been upgraded from a basic rotor/distributor setup to Saabs own Direct Ignition system (also called Trionic) from a 1995 Saab 9000. This gives the engine better fuel economy, better ignition timing and mapping options. The exhaust manifold is stock and has unequal port/header lengths to the turbocharger, which gives it a distinct burble. The downpipe and catalyst has been upgraded to 3” to give better flow. The engine also have other upgrades like, bigger head and intake, larger intercooler and bigger clutch.

The Saab 900 has some quirky features like the wraparound windshield, the ignition-lock placement in the centerconsole, front hinged hood to name a few.

Overall, the Saab 900 Turbo is a very versatile car with a large boot space, good engine performance, unique look, relative cheap and easy maintainence, neutral handling, execellent heating system and superb traction. The only big minus is that you have to battle rust constantly, but its worth it.

This car is basically my life, so much time and effort is spent on it, its literally a part of me. I saved this poor thing hours before it went to the scrapyard, to be able to fix it up, drive it all seasons is quite rewarding. Saabs are basically pure driving pleasure. I never get bored of this car.

My name is Jon, and this is my 1991 Saab 900 Turbo.

SAAB FOREVER! <3

Jeg er ikke helt sikker på hva jeg skal skrive, føler meg smått startstruck om dette stemmer, men jeg har parkert ved siden av deg i Arendal? Mulig mulig?

This is actually one of the best cars I’ve seen on this site! How much did you get it for if you don’t mind me asking?

Thanks! I got it quite cheaply, it had alot of rust and needed alot of work to get it going again. I saved it a day before, maybe hours before it was going to the scrapyard!

I have a 2003 saab 9-3, the GM one. I love that car more than anything, spend all my money on it even if there’s nothing to repair. Though I would really like to sit inside 99 turbo or 900 turbo- drive it somewhere quiet… I really admire your passion for this car and truly believe that one day I will get my hands on one of the classics:) Good luck!

Thank you, I just doing what I love! :) I have also driven a 99 Turbo, abit more primitive car than the 900 Turbo, but geez, what a real fun car to drive. The turbo lag is huge, nothing particular happens before 3000rpm, but when it hits that the car just shoots forward like a rocket, its fantastic! :)

chain-driven tranny bolted right under the crank-case, the timing chain on the firewall side…..man everything I look at on this car is un-conventional… I’m amazed, i didnt know how differently engineered they used to be
