The VW Golf R420: The "HyperHatch"
Can it be done: a true "HyperHatch"?
So not too long ago Volkswagen decided to up the ante of the Hatchback market with the release of one very special car: Golf R420
Not only has VW made this bonkers Hatch which features a 2.0 TFSI with, wait for it… 420BHP
At first it was planned to have this monster to have 400BHP, but then after some tweaking managed to get 420BHP from this engine unit.
As VW owns Audi, They released a concept of the TT with this 420BHP engine and the Golf R with the 400BHP engine… Then decided to make it level peggings and throw the higher tuned engine into both!
As you can see the TT has some minor body tweaks (and a huge damn wing) to it but overall still has the same shape and design as the current gen TT.
The Golf R420 however looks a little more unique without losing it’s base shape: it has a special bodykit, new wheels, a huge rear wing and… green.
Yep it has green stripes rather than the bland chrome from the GTD and R and not the iconic red from the infamous GTI.
So, you might be wondering what the heart of such a monster must looks like, well as engines go… this certainly isn’t a looker.
Yep, 420BHP that comes from a washing machine that’s connected to a airbox. But don’t let the looks fool you, this engine connected to the beloved 4 Motion AWD system has enough oomff to kick you and 4 others from 0-60 in a shocking 3.9 seconds, and will continue to push you into the seats until it hits it’s limited top speed of 174 MPH. LIMITED.
These figures are amazing when considering any vehicle, but when they come from a hatchback… well you know you have a supercar killer that comes straight from the factory!
So you have seen the exterior and engine, and you’d expect the interior to have a huge roll cage, dials and gauges everywhere and no real functioning part. You’d be wrong, The interior is very much Golf R/ GTI except the signature Green is carried out inside too, along with some fancy carbon fibre dials and a fancy steering wheel, everything else is… normal.
Oh and yes… you did see that correct…
This car currently has a manual, VW are trying to make a 10 speed automatic to cope with the engine’s figures and characteristics. But if the R is anything to go by, they will have both options available. (Hopefully)
So let’s wrap up here: It is being put into production at the end of 2015 and should be available January 2016 for around £40’000 of your hard earned cash, A mere £10’000 increase upon the R. However, this car itself is a bargain at that price: 2.0 so it will be decently economical but still packs a major punch, £40’000 for a supercar killer! Volkswagen have definitely played their cards right with this one…
