Can an EGR valve cause stalling when driving

My 2002 Clio 2 1.4 16v just started stalling for no reason. So i hooked up the scaner and the only error is the egr valve error. Also the program is not showing how much it opens (it should update in real time). It stalls very often, like every 5-10 min, the throttle seems to lag when I lift of so when I’m shifting gears the revs climb/stay the same for about a second and it seems to me that it has better compresion than before. Is it possoble it’s only the EGR that’s causing this issues. And the error is permanent- I can’t delete it. While other errors I can.
If the egr is the problem would just cleaning it fix it or should I replace it, or here where I live it’s popular to just remove the flap and put a screw in it’s place (don’t want to do that the flap is probably there with a reason?)

P.S. when I say better compression I meant that the engine is slowing the car more than before- don’t know if you say it like that in English

Yes it can! As the EGR valve is blocked the engine is ‘hunting’ and it will probably stall at low RPM’s!
