2005 Mazda MX-5 vs 2005 Ford Fiesta ST for a weekend toy/project/track car?

If you wanted a second car to do some modifications and take to the track whilst still keeping it registered to use to use on the road occasionally, which would you pick? I’m still keeping my Yaris for daily commuting use.

The MX-5 is a 1.8, 146bhp, 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, 31.7mpg
The ST is a 2.0, 148 bhp, 0-60 in 7.9 seconds, 38.2mpg

I guess the MX-5 is more fun to modify and has better handling.
It can be fun to turn the fiesta in a rally monster :) but you will be stuck with the FWD when you want to drive fast.

The Fiesta does handle very well, and I’m used to driving FWD on track… actually I’ve never driven a RWD car fast. The Mazda’s all seem to have rust issues whereas the Ford’s don’t, I still feel like the MX-5 is a more reliable car.

I’d take the MX-5.
It’s cheaper to buy and run, parts (both stock and modification) are cheaper, there’s less electric-stuff to be dealt with, and it’s more fun to drive (open top).
But I’d probably prefer the NA-version.

Yeah but rust is a big problem, I prefer the NA but they are all rusty and require welding every few years to pass MOT (our yearly inspection), even all the NBs I’ve looked at have had the bodywork welded which means the rust is likely to come back. Ford parts in the UK aren’t that expensive.
