1991 Volkswagen Polo CL
The half baked reshell of my old rat-look banger, I thought I had blown up… Turns out it was just a dead TPS…
Here’s the original, nicknamed ‘Von Rusty’, a ‘94 polo 1.05l poverty spec beater I got for free and abused for 7 years.

I got this one for £300 with a years ticket, completely standard minus some purple emulsion paint. Hid it away in the garage for a week to sort the paint, suspension and interior out utilising parts off ‘Von rusty’. It then had a number of catastrophic failures, mainly the head gasket failed, fuel pump relay failed and the fuel tank itself rotted out. But then failures mean upgrades! Current specs/modifications/parts/whatever include;
1.3 AAV engine, stock bottom end.
Rebuilt head, gasket port matched, valves reground, skimmed, flowed.
Unknown oddball camshaft (pos euro GT cam)
Intake manifold gasket port matched, flowed, intake pre heater deleted.
AEE exhaust manifold (short run for front exit)
Chinese copy cherry bomb (terrible crap, new silencer en route)
Homebrew SPI unit, using stock injector, AEE throttle plate, modified TPS and idle control solenoid to suit.
BPR7ES plugs
AEE distributor, with AAU trigger wheel and late spec 6N coil.
Early spec AAU 1.05l ECU, flashed EPROM to match engine modifications. (AAU ecu has higher rev limit than stock)
AEE fuel pump, hard wired through secondary dash switch.
190mm clutch plate
Rebuilt 8P gearbox.
Late spec short driveshafts
TA evo gas shocks
G-Maxx front springs (-80mm)
Rally Design coilover conversion on the rear.
MaxRPM ARB solid mounts
Bushings upgraded on TCAs (hard rubber not polybushed)
Oldschool 3 spokes, 13x6 et34 (corsa/nova extras???)
Nangkang NS2 tyres
Stiffened rear beam
Stock VW1 calipers, EBC Orange stuff pads (lethal brake dust), generic disks.
Rear drums from a late 6n, slightly larger diameter IIRC.
Motocorsa quick release boss
Generic dished steering wheel (not a bendy cheap Chinese thing)
Cobra Buckets from the 80’s (need reupholstering badly!)
Quick shifter - generic polo one
Fire extinguisher
LDperformance launch control and flat foot shift
Equus tacho
Kill switch
Rest of interior stripped
Basic stereo - punto dash speakers (3” hardly worth having…)
Still a few things I’ve got planned for the near future, still have an AVY engine sat in storage ready to go if I ever find the time to swap it! But looking to change the exhaust and front wings in the near future, and maybe a quaife gear knob…
Hoping to get some track action too this year, even if just a run up a hill. Would be nice to put it to its limit in a safe environment, all 50something horsepower of it!
