We Can't Get Enough Of The 2019 Suzuki Jimny's Off-Road Attitude
Few incoming cars excite us quite as much as the 2019 Suzuki Jimny. It looks like a miniature Mercedes G-Class, it’s small and light, and with an anticipated starting price of around £15,000, it’s very affordable.
Importantly, it can still do the rough stuff. It’s based around a tough ladder chassis, it has three-link rigid axle suspension and a low-range transfer gear. It’s not all old-school tech either, with a clever brake-based traction control system helping the distribute torque as necessary when you’re on a particularly slippery surface. Approach and departure angles are improved over the outgoing Jimny, too.
But those are just words. What you really need to do is watch the plucky Jimny tackling the rough stuff. We can now do this thanks to the b-roll cut you see above, which features just over four minutes of the pint-sized SUV getting very muddy and showing off some lovely flex.
We could watch it all day!

No.
Seriously though, there’s a good reason as to why the Jimny is hyped right now - because there is nothing like it that you can buy right now.
The only car in its price segment with similar off-road credentials is the Lada Niva 4x4, a great car in its own right, but it’s very old and doesn’t have the kind of tech (hill start assist, etc) that the Suzuki has. Then there only are the Land Rover, the Mercedes G (not the Beverly Hills spec versions) and the Jeep Wrangler. All of these are much more expensive.
Not going to lie; I really want one in that lurid day-glow yellow.
It’s cheap, it looks good, it’s capable, it’ll be reliable as all hell, it’ll be comfortable and it’ll be fun as f**k to punt around. The new Ignis is also cute as a button and dirt cheap, too.
This is such a weird time in car history where the most hotly anticipated cars in the media are a hot hatchback from Hyundai, a sports saloon from Kia and a mini off-roader from Suzuki.
The Ignis is an absolute BLAST, too. I had the mild hybrid version and I made as many single-carriageway overtakes in that as I would in my Octavia vRS. It really picks up well, mostly owing to the fact that it weighs practically nothing.

Would like to see CT do a Comparison video of the first jimny when they released it 1998 I think? And this one it’s one of the only cars to never really change shape
