The New Toyota Supra Will Be Here In 2018
When taking a look at the latest batch of Toyota Supra successors rumours last week, speculation naturally turned to when exactly we might see the finished product. This week, it seems we have the answer: according to some mysterious “new information” cited by Autocar, we’re looking at a 2018 launch for the Supra. The related BMW Z4 successor - which may be named Z5 - will arrive slightly before.
For both cars, we can expect a hybrid powertrain with an engine powering the rear wheels, and electric motors powering the front hoops, in a similar fashion to the BWM i8 and Honda NSX. It’s thought BMW will take care of the engine, while the motors and hybrid system will be the work of Toyota.
Other than the shared powertrain, the Supra and Z5 will be very different cars. Just like its predecessor, the Z5 will be a cabriolet, and will look vastly different to the tin-top Supra, which will take styling inspiration from 2014’s FT-1 concept (above). Since the FT-1 is flipping gorgeous, that’s a jolly good thing. It’s set to be longer than the Z5 too, as the new jointly developed platform is scalable.

The Supra all day
I’m not really interested in this first gen hybrid powertrain stuff as a consumer, the moment that stuff goes out of warranty that’s a financial burden and a half.
I’ll be seriously interested to drive the BMW more, but man… that’s going to be cash to get in and I’ll bet cash to stay in. The good news being that Z cars have had bad resale value and become affordable quickly so we’ll see how the reliability and cost plays out, and they could turn out to be fantastic third owner enthusiast cars down the road.
Its probably going to be a lot like the i8.
If the rumours are true and Toyota is behind the Hybrid part, i think reliability will be good.
the hybrid system will give the engine some leverage too so we might be onto something good here.
even though i would rather have it being driven by combustion engine only im very interested.
I would take the Toyota model tho.

They could produce the final car right as it is just with small changes on the grill and its perfect.

Later year MK4 Supras werent very affordable to the avarage man though
A new turbo Supra in 95 was $50k, which is $78k now. Nope, it never was affordable.
It’s going to be interesting to see the cars in their full glory. Really looking forward to 2018
