Eagle (1987-1998)

Have you ever heard about the Eagle cars? Probably not. Well, here comes the story:
After Chrysler bought AMC in 1987 they had the problem, that did not have many subbrands like Ford or GM. Then GM launched Saturn and promised innovative design and building methods, so Chrysler had to react. They launched Eagle…

Eagle Wagon (1987)

Their first car was the Eagle Wagon, but technically it was the AMC Eagle. They didn’t even change the name! Here you can also see, where the brand’s name is coming from. The total production was 2,306 Units, all station wagons, because all other models were dropped.
After that they needed a new model, because an AMC Eagle isn’t quite what people consider as innovative.

Eagle Medallion

The next one was a Renault. The Renault Medallion(Renault 21), rebadged as Eagle Medallion (Very creative). It was a captive Import and lasted until 1989.The engine had 103hp at 5000rpm. There was only this one.
They also developed a station wagon, which was judged as stylish and spacious.

Arguably the most stylish compact wagon on the market.

Sales were not very good, because there were plenty of bad rumors about Chrysler, like it is still the case today, and AMC had very limited Marketing strategies back then. Although the Medallion was rated very good in reviews. again not a sucess story.

Eagle Premier

Next one was the Eagle Premier. In 1988 they started producing in the new assembly halls in Brampton, Canada. Again a cooperation with Renault, also sold under the name Dodge Monaco. The exterior was designed by Italdesign. It was a four door sedan with much interior space and high quality . It was described as “a world class car” with “european handling” by automotive journalists and became successfull, but didn’t achieve the sales target.

Eagle Vista

The Eagle Vista was a rebadged Mitsubishi Mirage (The Station wagon a Chariot) and was produced from 1988 to 1992 by Mitsubishi and sold in Canada. It was available with either a 1.5 L straight-4 engine (69 hp or 51 kW), or a 1.6L turbocharged (106 hp or 79 kW) engine, and Manual 4 and 5 Speed transmissions and an automatic 3 speed. I really like the looks of it!

Eagle Summit (1989-1996)

Sold as Coupe, Sedan and Wagon, all cooperations with Mitsubishi. That’s why you might recognize the design. The wagon was known as “a funky cross between a sedan and a Minivan.”

Eagle Talon 1989-1998

Nice Eclipse, eh?

Produced along with it’s brothers Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser the Eagle Talon was a two door Sport coupe, wich featured Pop up headlights in it’s first generation. I guess, just because of this fact, most People around here will love it xD.
The Talon used 1.8L and 2.0L Mitsubishi Engines (4G37 I4, 4G63 I4, 4G63 I4 T, for all fans and experts), delivering up to 195 hp, and there was even an AWD version.
The car was on the Car & Driver 10 Best list on the 1st place in 1991 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_and_Driver_10Best#1991

By 1998, the Talon was the last model produced by Eagle. It was related to the Mitsubishi Eclipse, thre Dodge Avenger Coupe and the Chrysler Sebring Coupe, and had three Mitsubishi Engines avaible, producing now up to 210hp. The Talon was Eagle’s most successfull car with more than 115.000 Units sold.

Eagle Vision (1992-97)

Did you know that the so called Cab-forward design of this and other late 90s american cars originally comes from Lamborghini?
Chrysler bought the bankrupt italian brand in 1986, and they showed the concept Portofino on the 1987 Frankfurt Auto Show

The success of the concept made Chrysler putting a car with similar design in production…
The car was made moving by a V6 engine and FWD, and 105.000 units were sold until 1997.
Due to the discontinuation of Eagle in 1998 the planned succesor became the for it’s Cab-forward design well known Chrysler 300M.
The car was awarded as the Automobile Of The Year 1993 by the american car magazine Automobile

Eagle didn’t survive 1998 because of the merge with Daimler….

To end this post I have Eagle’s website from 1997

Mags

I actually walk past an Eagle Vision pretty much every day. It’s a very rare car here in Norway, and I kinda like the looks of it. Great post too!

Don’t forget the Eagle 2000GTX! Insanely rare rebadged Mitsubishi Galant, only sold in Canada. I’ve seen one.
