Why I love Volkswagen. . .
As you may or may not be able to tell, VW is my favorite brand. I could go on and on about why they are my favorite brand of cars; but for your sake, I’ll keep it down to five.
1.) VW is original
They don’t follow the crowd. I think Volkswagen has always done everything a little bit different than every other brand. Take the Golf III Harlequin as an example. I mean in all honesty what we’re they thinking when they decided to build them. Add the fact that they only made 446 of them, really adds a whole level of wacky to them. The Volkswagen Caddy, or as they’re normally called, Rabbit trucks is another good example of this. I am not at all downplaying either of these vehicles at all, I love them all, but rather just showcasing some of VW’s not so hidden quirks. Back to the rabbit pickup; what makes them sort of an oddball is that they’re front wheel drive. Most trucks are rear if not four-wheel drive. Another piece I found odd was the fact that the bed doesn’t separate from the cab, I don’t know of any other trucks that you can’t take just the bed from.
2.) VW owners are like family
Someone that’s not part of it may not see the sort of great friendships to be found as a dub owner, but we sure do. I see it all over, in parking lots, in fact today I went to the grocery store, I had parked far out away from everyone else (avoiding door dings); and I come out to find a very clean MK1 Rabbit had parked next to my MK2 Jetta. I see it on the roads, Volkswagen drivers constantly do the two finger wave to me. It really shows how great of a community we are.
3.) Rich history
Volkswagen was first established in 1937. Volkswagen’s first car was called the KDF, however the production was halted do to the start of World War II. The KDF later became known as the beetle. I love thinking about all of the cars made by Volkswagen because there are just so many, you have the type 3’s, Buses, the Thing, Hebmuller, Rabbit, Cabriolet, GTI, Vanagon, Fox, Quantum, Dasher, Jetta, Eurovan, Golf, R32, CC, Eos, Phaeton, Toureg, Golf R, Sportwagen, and many more.
4.) VW’s are fun
Now I get that not every bodies idea of fun isn’t blasting around in a front wheel drive hot hatch. But there are other options. People always think of Volkswagen as boring because all they make is front wheel drive, low power, hot hatches. Well, I’m here to tell you that’s not true, so you want to go offroading, take an Amarok, or heck even a Toureg (do I need to remind you of how many wins the rally Toureg has? It’s more than I can count on two hands.). Or you want an 8 cylinder car to bring some rumble to your life, take a W8 Passat. Or maybe you’re into rallying, take a Golf R, it’s all-wheel drive and has good power. My point is there are options.
5.) My families’ history of dubs.
I guess I’d have to start out with my grandpa. He had a bug in the sixties. Then the biggest VW guy in my family is my dad, he’s probably had over a hundred different cars. Some of my first memories were of his racecar, which just happened to be a scirroco. That car got totaled as you can see in the pictures. He then moved on to a Corrado. As for his road cars, he has had multiple notchbacks that he has restored. As well as a extremely clean cabriolet that we ABA swapped. My mom was always driving passat wagons while we’re growing up. And all my aunts and uncles all had Volkswagens. As for me I’ve had two, I had a MK1 rabbit that was sort of a rust bucket, I owned it for about 6 months, and drove that twice then sold it. This was before I got my license, now I have a MK2 Jetta GL that is my absolute pride and joy.
Thank you for reading. Maybe now I’ve given you a taste of why I love cars and VW’s so much. I’m interested to hear your thoughts, and what your favorite brand of car is!
