I'm back and this time it is the. The Toyota Supra #2
#whytheygotcanned
This is a Fanboy post to most. But I won’t be talking about the FT-1 as that is not the Supra. It is an entirely new car that continues the Toyota sports car legacy.
The Toyota Supra is a sports car that was produced by Toyota Motor Corporation from 1978 to 2002. The styling of the Toyota Supra was derived from the Toyota Celica, but it was both longer and wider. Starting in mid-1986, the A70 Supra became a separate model from the Celica.
The first Supra 1981-1986
There are some models of cars before the Supra but I am only talking about the Supra itself not the Celica. This was the first time Toyota made a car with the name but the Supra was still attached to the Celica.

The two different platforms of the Celica Supra. There was the “Performance Type” (P-type) and the “Luxury Type” (L-type). While being mechanically identical, they were differentiated by the available options; tire size, wheel size, and body trim. The P-type had fiberglass fender flares over the wheel wells, while the L-type did not. The P-type was also standard with the more sporty eight-way adjustable seats. The P-type did not get the option of a leather interior until 1983 (I never heard of the Celica Supra of having two different platforms, guess even I learn something new while doing these).
(This is taken from Wikipedia, felt lazy and didn’t wanna type this out)

the A70 platform or the real Supra 1986-1992
This was the first Supra (didn’t have the Celica name attached to it. So in my books it is a real Supra).

2,954 cc (2.954 L; 180.3 cu in) 7M-GE I6

5-speed R154 manual
4-Speed A340E automatic
Curb Weight:
Manual’s were, 1,350-1,540 kg (2,976-3,395 lb)
Automatic’s were, 1,625-1,815 kg (3,583-4,001 lb)
The new A70 Supra engine, the Toyota 7M-GE, was the flagship engine of Toyota’s arsenal. Both versions of the engine contained 4 valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams. The turbocharged 7M-GTE engine was Toyota’s first distributor-less engine offered in the US which used coil packs sitting on the cam covers and a cam position sensor driven by the exhaust camshaft. It was equipped with a CT26 turbocharger and was rated at 230 hp (172 kW) at 5600 rpm while the naturally aspirated 7M-GE engine was rated at 200 hp (149 kW) at 6000 rpm. Further refinement on the turbo model increased power to 232 hp (173 kW) and 254 lb·ft (344 N·m) in 1989 (so this was the start of the Supra’s legacy. Having a fun car to drive that offered power at the moment of flooring it. But it will take a down fall.)
Now the most well know Supra out there.
This is the final version of the Supra (Paul Walker made this car famous, that is a sad thing to say. And if you disagree, comment down below where you originally saw it.).
The A80 had two versions out there. With a rounded body styling and featured two new engines: a naturally aspirated Toyota 2JZ-GE producing 220 hp (164 kW; 223 PS) at 5800 rpm and 210 lb·ft (280 N·m) at 4800 rpm of torque and a twin turbocharged Toyota 2JZ-GTE making 276 hp (206 kW; 280 PS) and 318 lb·ft (431 N·m) of torque for the Japanese version. While the American version had 320 hp (thanks to the smaller turbo and bigger injectors. And the gentlemen agreement of the JDM market didn’t transfer over well into america.).
Engines:
2,997 cc (2.997 L; 182.9 cu in) Toyota 2JZ-GE I6
2,997 cc (2.997 L; 182.9 cu in) Toyota 2JZ-GTE I6 Twin-turbo
Transmissions:
5-speed W58 manual
6-speed V16x manual
4-speed A340E automatic
Curb Weight:
1,410 kg (3,109 lb) - 1,510 kg (3,329 lb) (non-turbo)
1,490 kg (3,285 lb) - 1,570 kg (3,461 lb) (turbo)
Not all Supra’s went 112 mph. The turbo version was tested to reach over 285 km/h (177 mph), but the cars are restricted to just 180 km/h (112 mph) in Japan and 250 km/h (155 mph) elsewhere (so that can be put to rest).
Okay now why did it get canned. Well with rising emissions coming from Japan’s strict car manufacturer laws. The Supra wasn’t to last longer than 3 versions. Japan wanted to reduce the carbon all of its cars made and how much space they took on the road. With a large car in a country with high-priced retail space (from what I read in a book. It can cost around $1,000 USD for a Square meter. So that means the house and lot I currently live in would be worth more than the current value of $750,000 CDN (this isn’t bragging it is because of the market failing to make new houses and people demand new houses)). But I prefer that the Supra name dies with the A80 and not a new one. Why you might ask, well think about this. Japan has decreased the amount of sport cars coming out of the country. This is due to the high regulations in place. If the Supra continued the next model could have been a worse model compared to the older one.
Sorry about the time between the first one and second one. Next one might be the Skyline or the Corrado.
Comments
I got to know about the famous a80 supra in need for speed underground. In fact, i never knew paul walker or the fast and furious movie back then..
Daamn i want the mk1 supra :(
I saw the a80 in NFS most wanted when my brother had a chrome one… I need to play that again
Clarkson talked about the real estate price in japan on old top gear too
Thag was back in the 90’s and today the price has most likely trippled.
I’ve seen a few LHD A80 models here in Canada selling for over $30,000.
And this 1990 Supra for $70,000 in Calgary!!
Picture:
I think that on A70 has showroom condtion and very little milage. Ya I have seen 2JZ-GE selling for $25,000 in Regina.
Nice bligpost, but regarding the skyline,it never got canned really,it just became an infiniti instead,(although the body style was only kept to the GTR)
Ah but I wont be talking about the G35 and G37 or the GTR as nissan could have kept the name in 4wd versions they choose not to.
I learned about the supra by my toy cars. That was probally the best toy car looking back. I lost it sadly.
It was either the fast and furious movies, or gran turismo, but that is like asking weather the chicken or the egg came first in my childhood
I saw mk4 Supra in either the f&f or NFS first, but I started to actually like it when I saw one in SuperSpeedersRob video
Interesting read… I’ve learned some more stuff about my dream car.
