Mountune Will Turn Your Ford Focus ST Into A 271bhp Monster Without Killing The Warranty
It’s a big dilemma if you’ve a new-ish can’t and you want more power: do you cope with the car’s stock output for a while longer, or do you upgrade anyway and lose the warranty? Fortunately if you’ve a fast Ford and live in the UK, Essex-based Mountune has had you covered for the last few years, thanks to its Blue Oval-approved upgrade kits.
Its latest is for the recently updated Ford Focus ST, and will bump the power from 247bhp to 271bhp, not far off the 276 on offer from the more sophisticated Seat Leon Cupra 280. The torque gets an increase too, with the total twist available now 295lb ft, up from 254lb ft. The increases are thanks to a bigger capacity alloy intercooler, low-loss cast crossover duct, a new ‘dual-entry’ air filter plus a remap.
The kit is £1195 plus fitting (it’s a two hour job, apparently), and when you get it done at a Ford dealer, you won’t be kissing goodbye to your warranty. So, should you buy one? That’s tricky to answer; as we’ve found that the Focus ST already has a rather unruly power delivery thanks to its lack of limited-slip diff or trick front suspension, you could argue that the last thing the car needs is more poke. On the other hand, as it’s already a bit of a savage, maybe making it even more bonkers wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
