Here's Some Cylinder Head Porting Giving A 91bhp Increase In Power

In the latest episode of Motor Trend's Engine Masters, an extensively ported cylinder head and inlet manifold combo is seen giving a small block V8 one massive increase in power

Cylinder head porting is perhaps a lesser known form of tuning these days, but it can be an incredibly effective one. As we’ve detailed before, it’s all about smoothing and re-profiling parts of a cylinder head, removing any defects creating in the casting process while optimising and enlarging the inlet and outlet ports.

This gives an increase in the flow rate of fuel and air, leading to an increase in power. It can be done in your own garage with fairly simple tools, but you really need to know what you’re doing, or have a ‘disposable’ head to practice on.

If you do know what you’re doing, and are willing to put the time in, the results can be dramatic. The extensively ported cylinder head and inlet manifold combo seen in this latest episode of Engine Masters is seen giving the small block Mopar V8 its sat atop a massive, 91bhp increase in power. All for free.

Impressive…

Good to know. So you can get past the 1/4 hp per cubic inch without spending too much.

So that’s 1/4 times the amount of cubic, oh wait that’s still 0. I don’t have a car

To be fair, the cylinder head on a Lupo is probably much smoother surffaced and optimized than this.

Wow, I knew it would make a difference, but not that big a difference. Must’ve been pretty crap from the factory

Agreed! The fact they got that much out makes me wonder about the quality of the heads. When u port a Honda b series head we only get 10-20 out.

197 bhp, to a possible 288? Jeez!

That’ll be one powerful Toyota if I did that.

Do it. It’s tedious…but so damn worth it.

Uh no… the gain is proportional to the engine displacement, boost, fuel ratio… and other various things, do that on your Toyota will probably get you about 15hp-20hp.
