Gordon Murray Has Designed The World's First Flat Pack Vehicle

The legendary McLaren F1 designer has turned his attention to the mobilisation of parts of the developing world, designing a 'flat pack truck' which can be assembled in 11 hours by three people

This curious-looking little runt is the Global Vehicle Trust Ox, and designer Gordon Murray ranks it ahead of anything else he’s ever worked on in terms of importance. For the man behind dominant Grand Prix racing cars and the McLaren F1, that’s a big statement, but it’s easy to see what he means: the Ox could help mobilise some of the most remote parts of the developing world.

Yep, it even gets a McLaren F1-style 'XP' prototype markings

Despite being smaller than most SUVs, the Ox can carry nearly two tonnes of cargo. Or if you want to carry some humans around, the Ox can take a total of 13 thanks to bench seating in the rear. Powering the whole shebang is a 2.2-litre diesel engine, good for 98bhp.

Most importantly though, the whole flat pack part of the deal means you can stuff six of the things inside a standard shipping container. Once it’s at the destination, it takes about 11 and a half hours to assemble by three untrained people.

It’s only at the prototype stage however: Global Vehicle Trust needs further investment before the Ox can go into production. One to watch with interest…
