The Borgward BX6 Is The Unlikely SUV That Could Come To Europe
Borgward, the old German brand that was declared bankrupt in controversial circumstances in the early 1960s, has just launched its latest car to rival the likes of the BMW X4. While it’s limited to developing markets for now, Borgward’s plans take it to Europe.
Its range is beginning to look more than a little Westernised as the firm gears up for exactly that task. This is the BX6, the Euro-centric coupe-crossover with four doors, a DS-alike front end and vaguely Renault-ish rear lights.
Yours with a 220bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot, an automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard. Sounds like quite a handy everyday car, really. A plug-in hybrid is on the way. It’s impressively well spec’d, with LED headlights, 19-inch wheels, stop-start and a leather interior. Naturally you can include sat-nav and the latest infotainment apps, too.
Launching in the Middle East and South America first, this year, it will be introduced to China and other Asian nations in 2019. After that… well, it’s purely a question of how quickly its sales successes bring it, or its successors, to the EU.
Borgward was revived in 2008 by the grandson of the man who founded it. The money comes from a subsidiary of Chinese automotive giant BAIC; the same one that actually builds the cars. The first new Borgward car in over 50 years went on sale in 2017.

Yaay Borgward is back
it looks like car companies want to make suvs that look like sedans and it makes no sense to me
Sharon, age 37 wants a “sporty” car but its also gotta be great on fuel consumption. She wants off-road readiness should it ever rain, or god forbid snow. It needs plenty of room for her kids and groceries but it needs to look sleak.
Sharon knows what she want’s
It’s just what sells now, and if it makes them money, they’ll make it.
More generic German(Chinese?) SUVs, just what the world needs!
German, not Chinese.
Its based in Stuttgart and owned by Christian Borgward. The cars are designed and engineered in Germany, but final engineering and production is in China via Chinese group Foton Motors (who also make cars on behalf on Daimler).
Its similar to what MG does with its cars; English designed and engineered with production in China. However, Borgward doesn’t have a Chinese parent company, it is its own entity.
When they start production of EVs, they’ll apparently open an EV factory in Germany rather than outsourcing it to China.
Hey Borgward
Every single car company called
They want parts of their car back
Wheres the petition to ban SUV manufacturing? What was wrong with estates and wagons…
And some British kids will say it looks ugly and call it the bogward
Good idea. I might use that.
Bogward? Why not Hogwart?
Because copyright issues.
God saw the interior of this at the IAA. Can I say how crap it is?
Can we just have an Isabella instead?
BORGWARD IS BACK WHAT??!?!?
In a wrong way sadly.
