9 Highlights From Last Weekend’s Motorsport Action
LED IndyCar panels were tested earlier this year and debuted over the Mid-Ohio weekend. The nifty little addition was brought in to aid fans watching the race, showing each car’s position, pit stop times and when the drivers were using push-to-pass. Let’s hope the panels are also introduced in other championships.
A perfect strategy and strong drive at Mid-Ohio saw Graham Rahal score a special home win – his second triumph of the season and first ever on a permanent road course. He held off Justin Wilson and Simon Pagenaud, closing to within nine points of championship leader Juan Pablo Montoya.
The World Rally Championship was in action at the terrifying Rally Finland. Andreas Mikkelsen was an early casualty, with a monster smash on Friday’s fifth stage.
He was soon joined on the sidelines by Hayden Paddon, after he went off one stage later. Just a few scratches…
Robert Kubica made a dramatic exit from stage 18 of Rally Finland, sliding off and rolling his Ford Fiesta. Fortunately he was okay. His car, however, was not!
4. Flying through the forest
There are few things better than watching WRC cars getting chucked around gravel roads at insane speeds. Jari-Matti Latvala clinched the win at Rally Finland, with a record-breaking average speed of 125.44kph.
The previous best speed of 122.89kph was set at the same event by Sebastien Loeb in 2012. Latvala finished 13.7 seconds ahead of VW team mate Sebastien Ogier.
Kasey Kahne lost control of his Nascar Sprint Cup machine and scarily spun across the track and into the pit lane during the Windows 10 400, hitting the wall so hard that debris became embedded in the barrier. Fortunately no one was injured.
The Sprint Cup race at Pocono was a battle between those who could make their fuel last. Several front-runners ran out of gas in the final laps, with Matt Kenseth winning the Windows 10 400 from Brad Keselowski – despite running over his pit crew earlier on.
Tempers heated up between Ryan Reed and Ross Chastain after the Nascar Xfinity series race in Iowa, following contact during the green-white-chequered finish. A shove was then proceeded by some strong words, although neither could probably hear what was said. Ryan Blaney won the event.
The DTM series was in Austria for round five of the 2015 season. Edoardo Mortara took a fine win in the first race at the Red Bull Ring, despite a broken thumb.
Mattias Ekstrom triumphed in tricky conditions in race two, but his drive was overshadowed by the controversy behind…
Max Verstappen completed an F1 demonstration in a Red Bull RB7 over the weekend, at the TT Circuit in Assen. Sit back, relax and enjoy the glorious V8 noise.
