is it easy to turbo an e32 735i or is it easier doing a v8 swap over. wantinf anyone to point me in the right direction as i want to get as much info before deciding
Pretty sure V8 is cheaper and easier as the parts you’ll need are all there, also you get the chance to service the engine while it’s out so that makes for reliability
Well a ready made turbokit for an m30 costs 3-5k usd (check Turbochargindynamics), no problems with that, just get tools and start bolting the thing up, great thing if you wish to get some power going. Compile one yourself and you’re looking at 2k usd (Do not ever check chinese ebay turbokits), but it would require some custom fabrication and some basic knowledge on turbocharging cars. That is exactly the choice Im going for. A v8 swap… I wouldn’t, since the power gains won’t be in the “WOW” area, but feel free to, all I know is here in Europe, the BMW country, the good engine goes for about 1200 usd, gearbox for 600 (Or 1300 if you want a manual) and you need to add a new diff, half axles and drivetrain which is usually another 600 (most of which is diff). A clutch will set you back painfully, at about 500 usd for full set. Then there’s a ton of problems with fitting it all. It’s SUPPOSED to fit, but there’s no guarantee that it will, since yours is a pre-restyle and 740 is a restyle, meaning your transmission tunnels might not match, rendering your traverse for instance, useless, or your driveshaft hanging, etc etc etc. Even if you DO hook it all up, it’s a mere 280hp, and zero mods to talk about to get any more power (unless ofcourse you want to spend another 5-6k on a supercharger kit and get massive 400 hp, a number which is easily achievable on M30 with turbo).Anyways, hope this helps, in my opinion - the only swap you should ever do is for an M30B35, with 9:1 CR and then you can turbocharge the thing and get 450hp on stock internals and stock gasket. Bit of work and you can squeeze more, some new internals and 800 isn’t a limit.
Thank you very much …so much needed info
Igor Konuhov’s post sums it pretty well, I would only add that it really only depends on two things - what you want from the car and how much are you willing to spend.
