Because most petrol or gas engines rev higher than diesels.

Is this really the only reason?

Because it depends on ones opinion?
I have to say though, that most petrol engines sound better than diesel, but there is nothing better than the deep rumble of a diesel v8 ❤️

As said above they don’t rev as high which takes away from the sound but mainly diesels are economy built cars so the manufacturer isn’t going to build a loud sporty exhaust system whereas as they will for bigger petrol engines knowing that the market for them will more likely like that kinda thing. There are exceptions to that obviously. Plus nearly all diesels are turbo charged and most great sounding petrols are big capacity high cylinder n/a engines

According to my info, gasoline ignitions inside the cylinder blocks are much smoother than explosions of diesels. i believe that the smooth process of igniting gasoline allows the engines to rev higher and to have more refined sound, while diesel explosions are much more intense and rough, which makes the car sound louder and more “non-pretty(?)” i would say.
