Altered Wheelbase Drag Cars
I like to classify myself as a person who is obsessed with cars. More so than others even, there’s literally no style of car I don’t like. But there’s one that really stands out to me that I have always dreamt about building. An altered wheelbase drag car.
Since we just recently got the drag community, I feel a lot if people don’t know about these insane cars.
Back in the ‘60s drag racing was crazy. Big motors and not enough technology to handle them. Ford, Chevrolet and Dodge were loving it, they used the saying “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday. While other motorsports like NASCAR, Trans Am and other sports car racing was good, drag racing was perfect for the US market because it was all motor.
Teams kept upping the power, but the cars couldn’t handle it. They would just smoke the tires all the way down the strip. So there was an interesting way to solve it. Move the front and rear wheels forward for better weight distribution, usually 45/55 weight distribution. The idea was to get the most weight possible over the rear wheels to keep the them planted. Lifting the front end also helped with pre loading the rear for launch.
There’s tons of cool stories from drag racing, but altered cars are amazing. They’re not for everyone, but their purposeful stance is just awesome.
