Driving styles in style: How important is 'The Look' to the driver?
We all love cars, that’s why we’re here right? But as i’m sure we’ll all agree, cars are so much more than just a machine or a means from A to B. Take it to whatever degree you see fit but there is no denying there is also a lifestyle associated with cars.
…..Now i’m not talking about ‘fanboyism’ here, this has nothing to do with brand allegiance, lets just get that sorted right off the bat. This is about looking and feeling the part. About how cars play into our culture, character, and style.
So the question is, which level of the spectrum do you see yourself aspiring to fall in to? Does style mean anything to the driving experience?
1. The New-School Professional
Modesty is the key. You cringe at the idea of showing off. Your idea of style is elegant simplicity. You keep yourself well groomed and well dressed but nothing more, you are too busy killing it in the business world to be vain anyway. You express your passion for driving with the same simplistic approach. You like professional yet also dynamic cars that don’t cry for attention ( but can still raise the hair on the back of your neck.)
2. The Gentleman Driver
You are very fashion savvy but you’d never be caught dead shopping. You have twenty or so antique aviator wrist watches and five pairs of leather gloves. People love you because you are the quiet-confident type, you ooze cool-class and you’d hardly ever have to say a word, your style says everything . You’ve been to forty-five countries and you drink espresso after dinner. You carry this coolness into your cars, you have a passion for classics and moderns alike, you’re no speed-freak but you have an affinity with performance machines…. Basically you’re James Bond.
3. The High-Roller
You make a LOT of money, and you can afford to be a bit of a show-off….. (And you do anyway because you are probably a Footballer.) You have a bespoke five-figure suit for every day of the week and at least several Omega wrist watches. People envy you with a bleeding passion. You’re outgoing and extremely social at the parties you hold on your yacht. You daily drive an Aston Martin and keep a supercar or two for the weekends.
4. The Ego-Maniac
You’re a star, you love to express yourself and show everybody what you’ve got and what you’re made of. You spend a lot of money on accessories and designer clothes that look like regular clothes. People like being seen around you at the club (because that’s where you hang out) and you like being seen at the club. Self promotion is everything and therefore so is being flashy… which is why all of your cars are gold wrapped. You exclusively drive high end luxury cars and keep them all parked in the driveway so people can see.
5. The New Good-Ol' Boy
You’re hard working and your fingernails are never clean but you are true Gentleman nonetheless. You are well educated and starting your own company but nobody would ever guess it by your ten-year-old pair of Levi’s. Aside from your fingernails you are well kept, and keep a clean shirt on…. Doesn’t mean you don’t like to have some fun in the mud every now and then but you are a professional first and foremost. You keep to yourself but are always described as kind and caring. You’ve got $125,000 invested into a truck that can go anywhere and do anything and that’s all you need.
6. Joe Somebody
The idea is image not style. You don’t have much to spend on fashion and you don’t care much anyway, you keep a nice watch on and some good shades too. You wear a white t-shirt almost every day and you’re not bothered to look like a million bucks. You care more about being yourself and are fundamentally morally grounded. You keep it simple with your cars asking them only ever to be dynamic and fun.
BONUS: This Guy....
Nobody ever taught you style, and you never cared anyway. You’re not driven by any career path you are quite happy running pizzas for a living. Every red cent of your paycheck goes into your car, and it’s all you ever talk about. You’re a virgin and you are going to stay like that. You just got done lecturing somebody about heel-toe shifting on Youtube even though your car is automatic. Your favorite car is Paul Walker’s Nissan Skyline and your Facebook profile says you are a drifter even though you’ve never even been to a racetrack….. We all know somebody like this guy…
