The new and highly controversial Rolls-Royce SUV will be called the Cullinan, confirming what the rumour mill has been suggesting for some time.

Actually, the fact that it was called ‘Project Cullinan’ during its development was a bit of a giveaway, if we’re honest.

Ahead of the car’s reveal at the Geneva Motor Show next month, Rolls has released a series of pics of the car in camouflage, plus a new teaser. The company says it was named after the largest flawless diamond ever found, the 3106-carat Cullinan Diamond that was found in a South African mine in 1905.

Brace for much PR, because in a press release, the company CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said:

“It is the most fitting name for our extraordinary new product. Cullinan is a motor car of such clarity of purpose, such flawless quality and preciousness, and such presence that it recalibrates the scale and possibility of true luxury.

“Just like the Cullinan Diamond, the largest flawless diamond ever found, it emerges when it is perfect and exists above all others.”

Breathe; the PR barrage is done and dusted. We don’t have much detail to bring you yet, other than that it will send drive to all four wheels and use a big ol’ V12 at the front.

It’s said that Rolls wants the Cullinan to be almost as smooth off-road as it is on it, which is one hell of a challenge to take on. Later this year we might just find out for ourselves.

Ironically it won’t ever go off road. I bet the press release pictures of it will be the only time we’ll see it going off road.

SUVs don’t ever go off road. Not exactly a trait to criticise anymore

The Quirky Richard

When this trend of making luxury/sporty SUVs that will never see in their life a dirt road ends, what there will be next? Offroad luxury sedans? Rally supercars?

Not sure about off road luxury sedans but rally supercars do exist. 😉

Yeah, sure, as if anybody who buys this car is going even going to take it on a dirt road. It has the exact same target audience as the stupid G63 AMG.
