Say Hello To The BMW M4 CS: The GTS's Less Angry Cousin

BMW has revealed its new M4 'Competition Sport', a softened up version of the GTS. But the chances are you can't buy one...
Say Hello To The BMW M4 CS: The GTS's Less Angry Cousin

We found out last month that BMW has been readying a slightly less hardcore version of the heavily track-focused M4 GTS, and it’s now here. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the M4 Competition Sport, and in all probability you can’t have one.

As reported last month, there are three main hurdles: firstly, only 60 will be made - the GTS gets a production run of 700, so the CS is actually considerably rarer. Secondly, it’s stupidly expensive at €132,900 (£104,000); not a whole lot less than the full-blown GTS. Thirdly, and most peculiarly, this one’s only for the Spanish market.

So, now we’ve swiftly dealt with the disappointing bit of the M4 CS, let’s wipe the tears from our screens and keyboards and take a closer look at this beast. The most obvious change is the engine: here, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six puts out a mere 444bhp - the same as an M4 Competition Package - down from the 493bhp the GTS manages thanks to its fancy water-injection tech.

It’s still plenty fast though, with its 4.0sec 0-62mph time being just 0.2sec down on the GTS. At the top end you’re looking at 174mph, as opposed to 190mph.

Like the GTS, the CS gets myriad bodywork upgrades in the name of adding downforce including side skirts, a new rear diffuser and a particularly unsubtle spoiler sat on the boot lid. Under the skin, we’re looking at plush adaptive dampers and standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes.

The cabin is where the whole more civilised remit is most obvious. Instead of a pair of thin, uncompromising carbonfibre bucket seats in the front, the CS gets two more comfortable looking chairs, albeit still with some chunky side bolsters. You’ll also notice that there’s no half cage in the back, as the rear bench seat is still there. So, you can bring a couple of extra passengers along to scare the bejesus out of…

Wait, so it is a GTS, with another name and comfy seats?Apparently, Spanish people don’t want BMW messing with their buttocks.

You probably missed the part where it says the GTS is way, way faster.

I am sorry about you, we are not greece, here in Spain we see supercars. Does Puerto Banús remind you something?

You’re an idiot. I guess you’ve never been to Puerto Banús, in Marbella? I guess you don’t know teams in Spain have the highest paid football players? If you don’t know anything about Spain, shut your mouth.
