Woah! Calm down. Yes I said something bad about Initial D, CALM DOWN!
First off, I just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE Initial D. It’s an awesome show, but here’s why Wangan midnight is better.

#1: The characters

Intial D has its interesting characters, but they seem to be more of the exception. Intial D’s interesting characters seem to be less common. Like in the case of Mato and Sayuki, the interesting ones only show up for occasional episodes. Whereas Wangan has a more diverse group of characters in every episode.

#2: The cars

Wangan midnight just flat out has more variety of its cars than Initial D.
Initial D seems to follow a straightforward formula when it comes to the cars, 80s and 90s Japanese cars.

Wangan on the other hand has a WAAAAAY more diverse car roster. For example: you have a Testarosa, old Porsche, 300ZX, and the classic 240Z.

#3: Tuning

Car guys LOVE tuning and working on their cars. And for a lot of us, we get really excited when TV shows and movies about cars have an emphasis on the tuning aspect of cars. Initial D has its fair share of tuning stuff, But wangan hits it out of the park! Its got a heavy focus on how the cars reach the high speeds in the show. It gives you an under the hood look at what makes the cars so fast. And for a Petrolhead, there’s nothing better!

#4: Unpredictably

Wangan midnight doesn’t have the issue of being predictable.
For me, Initial D got really boring by around season 4. And that’s because it was predictable. It was always the same, I.E Takumi wins EVERY. SINGLE. RACE!!! Whereas Akio losses quite a few times over the course of the show. Takumi always wins by some magical bullsh!t. Which brings me on to my next point.

#5: BULLSH!T, BULLSH!T, BULLSH!T.

The way Takumi wins is uter bullsh!t.
Here’s a few examples: Gutter “technique”, God hand, headlight trick, S2000 guy getting sick, and many, many more. Even the water cup thingy. Trust me, I’ve tried it. Akio wins by sheer tallent and skill, not bullsh!t. And he also doesn’t win every race.

#6: No terrible english dubs

I don’t really think this needs to be explained.
Initial D has some truly AWFUL English dubs. Wangan is Japanese or nothing!

#7: This guy.

Itsuki……..just Itsuki
Wangan doesn’t have this clown………and that’s a damn good thing :P

This whole article is bullsh!t, just because itsuki type characters are not in wangan and because there barely any tuning in initial D doesn’t make Wangan better…

I haven’t watched Initial D in a while so I might be wrong but the whole Takami is a driving god sorta made it boring for me.After a while, he just kept winning and it got boring for me.It wasn’t is he gonna win but hows he gonna win.Keisuke was pretty awesome because he was just some guy who races a lot and has a ton of driving experience.And they both go into serious track racing after the finale.TBH Itsuki wasn’t that bad I did like the supporting characters (takamis friends ).But i still loved the show.I didn’t watch wangan midnight but I did watch the movie which was pretty good

Yeah, I know what you mean. It was super boring watching Takumi win all the time. Btw, the Itsuki thing was sort of a joke. But as for Wangan, all the episodes are on Youtube. And I highly recommend you go and watch it. I was skeptical if I’d like it after being a big fan of Initial D, after the first 4 episodes I was in love. Also Wangan has a better opening theme ;)

The really BAD thing about Wangan Midnight is the fact that some key characters actually disappear out of nowhere,like the guy with the stock FC,was he a great friend of Akio?Also,the guy with the Testarossa,he was Reina photographer and friend,where did he go?And I know there was another “forgotten” character,but at the moment I don’t remember him.

That is true. Kuo-chan (white FC) and the Testa dude (forgot his name) seemed to disappear

Yeah i too agree that the cars in Wangan Midnight. For a while a blue 240z was my dream car 😂

Meh, Wangan had its “magic” aspect too with the Devil Z that chose its driver and could keep up with anything even though it was still running an L28.

Most of the time I was watching Wangan all I could think of was “Where’s the cops?” With Initial D they were out in the country in the middle of the night and they showed how the spotters helped with what little other traffic there was. In Wangan they’re blazing down the freeway in the middle of Tokyo at 160 mph, in traffic.

The Funimation dub wasn’t bad at all actually. Original soundtrack, and original sound effects. Voice actors are believable as well and really performed their best.

After watching the whole Initial D seasons i wanted to start something else about cars. The choice was clear, Wangan Midight. I watched the first 7 episodes but i stopped. Why? The anime was really boring, The Devil Z would impact on the same point over and over again for some reason , at a very high speed, it breaks down and then when he repairs it it does the same thing. Another thing i didn’t like are the boring races, just go straight on the highway at very high speed, trying to overtake your oponent? Why don’t they go to a drag race circuit?
Initial D showed the 80s and 90s japanese car because the environment is Japan of the 90s, Why somebody would even import a car to drive it on the mountains and break it, most of the characters are young people, with li,ited amount of money, importing a car would cost too much. If you watch all the series you would see that characters changes as takumi goes with the Project D, you will see Itsuki just on occasional episodes. If you watch the whole series you would see the characters story, especialy Ryosuke Takahashi’s.
