The Vauxhall Insignia GSi Is More Expensive Than A Volkswagen Golf R

It may be a very good car and we really do want it to do well, but with the best will in the world the pricing still looks pretty steep...
The Vauxhall Insignia GSi Is More Expensive Than A Volkswagen Golf R

Vauxhall has announced prices for the surprisingly brisk and well-sorted Insignia GSi. And it’s not cheap.

After some deserved good press for the latest Insignia, which is as well-rounded a family car as you could ask for, Vauxhall seems to be chancing its arm with a price tag that eclipses even the likes of the Volkswagen Golf R.

The Grand Sport body style (that’ll be the saloon, then) of the new, warmed-over averagemobile starts at £33,375, and for that you get a very good car. There’s a 256bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and a 206bhp twin-turbo diesel to choose from.

There’s also an estate, or Sports tourer. That has the same choice of engines and starts from £34,875. We’d like to reiterate what a good car the Insignia has become, and that the GSi should be the best of the lot, but… that does seem rather expensive if you’re after a versatile performance-minded family car.

The 306bhp, five-door, manual Golf R hatchback is £10 cheaper than the GSi saloon. For front-wheel drive thrills, the explosive Seat Leon Cupra 300 costs £30,895 even in the more practical estate guise - £2480 less than the Insignia. Even the four-wheel drive DSG-specced Leon Cupra estate is almost £800 more affordable than the cheapest GSi.

As for similar-sized alternatives? The 248bhp BMW 330i M Sport saloon costs £34,730, £1355 more than the Grand Sport but a gnat’s wing cheaper than the Sport Tourer.

We’d like the Insignia GSi to do well. We really would. We know it’s a class larger than the cheaper cars we’ve compared it to, but they’re designed to achieve broadly the same goals. Here’s hoping it gets sold with some seriously attractive finance deals.

You can’t compare them. You’re comparing a small executive to a hatchback, the Insignia has much more interior space

If you want a new car and get the maximum bang for the buck, you should consider the Charger Hellcat.
Sure, not everybody can afford that much hp, but what you get is phenomenal for the price tag.

In the compact class it might be the Hyundai i30 N.
We’ll find out when more people, including CT staff, are testing it on a daily basis.

This is a bad comparison…maybe the golf R has more power but what about backroom space, trunk space etc. The insignia is one class above. Dump who thinks they should cost the same

What a boring looking car. Wonder if the interiors are better built than the previous generation

way better. You need to sit in one at a dealer. Very fine quality, though missing the mini finish. Unbelievable bang/buck car

Sorry Matt but this article is just wrong in so many ways.

First off you cant really compare the Golf to the Insignia because its competing with the Astra …

Not to mention the 330i argument which is (sorry) beyond ridiculous: The 34 k you stated in the article
for the BMW is for the bare stripped manual version. Once you include all the extras the GSi already has (AWD, auto tranny, LED headlights, Sat Nav, ambient lighting just to name a few) youre easily looking at a 5000 - 6000 pound price gap at least.

Golf is way beneath Insignia, dear Golf lovers… Are you not aware of this? Compare beloved Golf to Astra, and Passat to Insignia, despite what marketing and journalist say, do the comparison of cars for yourself.
