If you’ve ever stolen a police car on Grand Theft Auto, then you know how much of a challenge it is to escape from the cops after you’ve done the deed. Three Los Angeles Police Department cadets found out that it’s even more difficult to do it in real life, and have since been arrested.

Two police vehicles were stolen and subsequently crashed by the teenagers after they had split up to try and avoid being caught. The offenders were two boys, aged 15 and 17, and a girl aged 16. The second vehicle ploughed into an innocent motorist. CNN reports that the vehicles were reported missing after an inspection of the department’s inventory.

Not only did the trio steal the vehicles, but also a bulletproof vest, two tasers and police radios. After all three were arrested, it emerged that a third vehicle had also been stolen, and had been kept for over two weeks. That’s despite the inventory inspections supposedly happening daily.

It’s thought that the cadets might have impersonated some of their superiors to obtain the three vehicles.

“Not only did the trio steal the vehicles, but also a bulletproof vest, two tasers and police radios. “. Good thing they didn’t steal a SWAT van with top of the line rifles, grenades among other equipments then. How ignorant must one be when such vehicles go missing from the inventory?

Update:
4 more LAPD cadets arrested after theft of police vehicles. Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said four additional arrests have been made in the theft of LAPD cruisers by police cadets.
Beck said investigators also uncovered “a couple of occasions” where the cadets involved are believed to have made traffic stops in the stolen cruisers.
