A Rally Car On A Zip Wire Is Today's Gold-Standard Jaw-Dropping Stunt
Hands up if you’re here to make sure we’re not pulling your leg on this. As mad as it sounds, we can promise you that Dayinsure, the short-term insurance provider and lead sponsor of Wales Rally GB, really has sent a Ford Fiesta down a mountain on a zip wire.
This barrel of madness, captured in the short video above, is all part of the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB’s efforts to build the hype ahead of the early October event. We’d say they succeeded. The rally, already one of the most exciting on the calendar, will have to work hard to top this.
Zip World Titan was the venue for the astonishing #Skydriver stunt, believed to be the first of its kind ever performed. Situated in Snowdonia on the same site as two of the rally’s speed tests, just north of Blaenau Ffestiniog, both the rally and the Zip World Titan stunt take in the famous Slate Mountain. Ben Taylor, managing director of the Dayinsure Wales Rally GB, admits things may have got out of hand at the planning stage…
“To promote the thriving adventure sports destinations in north Wales which, of course, includes the World Championship rally, our original thoughts were to put some of the top drivers down the zip wire… but, together with those at Zip World and our title partners at Dayinsure, we all got a bit carried away.”
Too right. For the stunt – and the driving thereafter – the Fiesta was piloted by Matt Edwards, the leader of the Prestone MSA British Rally Championship. There’s also a cameo appearance from WRC driver Elfyn Evans, the first and only Welshman to win a round of the WRC: last year’s Wales Rally GB. He seemed impressed by the slightly bonkers stunt:
“The stunt sounded absolutely crazy when I first heard about it and, believe me, it was even crazier to witness. I’m just glad it wasn’t me in the car.”
Adult admission to the speed tests on Slate Mountain are included with the Friday Day Pass ticket, which is £28 when bought in advance. On the gate it’s £30. Make sure you book some Zip World Titan time while you’re there, but you’ll probably have to leave your ride in the car park.

You can say this Fiesta had a…
Flying finish!
Okay I’m done now
You’ve passed this pun test with flying colours…😉
I heard this was on of the best performing rally cars you could drive, and that it just GLIDED around the track with FLYING colors. That was quite a pinderful ST-atement I just made
Not sure if I understood those puns. The last one may have gone OVER my head.
That is still a 2018, so according to the last article the 2019 fiesta would glide down that zip wire faster!
Amateurs…
Fast and Furious did it first
Flying in a car attached by some wire?
Insurance be like: “that’s ok don’t worry”
You changed your brake rotors for some better one and put some coilovers and didn’t list your car as modified?
Insurance be like
“he is done for”
clever editing but i would have loved to see the real landing
“Man, I wish we could have flying cars someday.”
AHEM
Cool stunt, but would have been more impressed if it was actually the rally car on the cables, and not the decalled up road car that it actually was. All they had to do was put the rally alloys onto the road car, and we’d never notice!
But why?
