The Pre-1997 Car Ban In Paris Won't Affect Classics

With the French capital determined to tackle its well-documented issues with smog, it was announced earlier this month that Paris would be banning all cars built before 1997 from its city centre on weekdays. At the time, it was assumed this would even cover classic cars like the beloved 2CV, but just days before the ban is due to come into force (1 July) The Federation Francaise des vehicules D’Epoque (FFVE) has announced that it’s struck a deal with city bosses to give an exemption for cars 30 or more years old.

Despite the reprieve for some motorists, the restrictions are still set to tighten. By 2020, any car built before 2010 - plus any motorbike made before 2015 - will be barred from the city centre on weekdays.

When the initial pre-1997 ban comes into force later this week, any driver ignoring the new rules can expect a €35 fine - rising to €78 next year.

I always found it weird that the US runs semi-strict emissions tests for new cars
I could have a straight piped 240 and fail emissions
(this is not considering California)
But I could take that same engine and cram it into a Datsun 510 and I wouldn’t have to pass any emissions tests

So cars from 1987 to 1997 can’t make it into Paris. So no Porsche 959, Ferrari F40, Ruf Yellowbird, Lotus Carlton, and Bugatti EB110 will ever see Paris again…

Then I roll around in a Hennessy-tuned Hummer with the crappiest mpg possible.

The guy across the street driving a fuel effienct AMC Gremlin gets arrested.

Logic.

Doesn’t matter, because as with all batteries, over several years they’ll basically become unusable. But unlike with most other batteries, it will cost too damn much to replace them. At that point, you might as well buy a new Tesla and sell the used batteries to a recycling company and the chassis to a scrapyard.

So 12 years worth of cars will be banned?
Also what about the people who can’t afford to buy a car newer than 1997?

Direct from France:
The goverment is stupid… As it has always been. This law is so stupid, that it will be legit to drive my Lotus in cities, but not my daily-drive anymore.
Instead of taking advantage of the EU normalised C0² and consumption official figures to ban polluting cars from Paris. They choose to ban only the poor families who doesn’t have money to buy new cars. It’s of course not just for pollution purposes, but also a boost to industries.
The good news is that, they are stricter with diesel than gasoline engines. But the level of stupidity is still to damn high… Because it comes after encouraging diesel industry for 30 years.
