The Porsche 919 Evo Has Just Set A 5m19s Nurburgring Lap Record

Porsche's '919 tribute' has just crushed the 35-year-old outright lap record of the Nurburgring Nordschleife - by 52 seconds! Check out the on-board footage right here

Hold onto your hats – and just about everything else, people – because the all-time outright Nurburgring lap record has just been obliterated.

Porsche’s rules-free 919 Evo, based on its hybrid Le Mans racer but with all the restrictions taken away, has clocked a barely-believable 5m19.545s lap of the famous Nordschleife. Driven by Porsche LMP1 pilot Timo Bernhard, that’s not just a few seconds better than Stefan Bellof’s 1983 lap record; it whacks that 6m11.13s time over the head and eats it for breakfast. It’s not quite under five minutes, but still…

We reported almost a month ago that the 919 had been spotted at the Nurburgring as part of a photoshoot alongside the iconic 956 C, which, not-so-coincidentally, was the car Bellof completed his lap in.

As it turns out, that wasn’t the only reason it was there. Exactly as we’d hoped, the 919 Evo went for the outright lap record. It didn’t just take it, though: it smashed it by 52 seconds.

All we can do is sit, open-mouthed at the astonishing speed of that car. Freed from WEC regulations its new aerodynamics kit adds over 50 per cent more downforce, for corner speeds that should look insane on the on-board footage.

About that, Porsche: please release the on-board footage immediately, so we can spend the next 72 hours watching it on repeat.

EDIT: On-board footage now released and embedded above. Say goodbye to your weekends, everyone.

The old record was done at 125.422mph average speed time, while the new record was 20.247mph faster, it took 35 years to go that much faster lets see thats 0.578mph per year increase….sorry I am a nerd with the numbers!

We could have easily smashed the record before with a Formula 1,the reason it wasn’t beaten before was most likely for respect at Stefan Bellof, all i know is that maybe Ev kids will now want to say their Model S can do it 2.000 times faster, the key of a fast time is both car performance and driver performance , if the performance of the car is inferior to the driver performance either won’t be able to fully exploit their Potential.

Cloridan Beauchamps TheMindGarage holy shit. This is 11 seconds faster than I predicted. At this point, we’re not far from redbull x2010 s1 levels of performance. In fact, the stock x2010 is significantly slower than this, as it’s only supposed to be a slight improvement on F1 cars.

the stock x2010 mod in assetto corsa does it in around 4 seconds, however we cannot be certain of how accurately it replicates the original, so i’ll continue to use the original X2010(around 3:19 with a focused driver driving as fast as possible in GT6) as a reference point for comparisons, as its supposed to exceed the performance of any racecar by a lot and push the human body to its limits, not just be a slightly improved f1 car

“ a slight improvement on F1 cars.”
Very late but even a slight improvement on 2018 f1 cars is still way faster than the 919 evo . Vettel, Räikkönen and Hamilton all broke the 919 evo spa record in Q2 of the 2018 belgian gp before the rain came in Q3 preventing them from going faster .
