The Next Ford Focus RS Will Be A 400bhp, £40,000+ Beast

The next Ford Focus RS will go hunting the Audi RS3 and the Mercedes-AMG A45 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system and around 400bhp.

Targeted for a 2020 launch, the car will have power and torque figures to rival any of the German hot hatch behemoths we tested recently. While the internal combustion engine might not change all that much from the current 370bhp Mountune-fettled 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo, it will be boosted by an integrated 48v starter/generator (ISG) that will add up to 30bhp and 70lb ft, according to Autocar.

That torque – peaking at an estimated 425-450lb ft – should be available instantly from a standstill for a significant drop in acceleration times. Hitting 62mph several tenths faster is likely, putting it in the low-four-second bracket. The ISG will also allow seamless restarting using less fuel, plus longer engine-off periods while the car is in motion.

Speculation is rife that the new system will be teamed with a dual-clutch automatic gearbox to get the best out of it, but either way, an electrically-driven turbocharger seems likely. This more efficient means of spinning the snail should reduce turbo lag and help drop CO2 emissions by as much as 30g/km from its current 175g/km.

The dream of the affordable RS might be coming to an end, though. With the outgoing car’s Heritage Edition final hurrah already priced at £39,895, Ford is hinting at a price in the low £40,000s. All that new technology has to be paid for, after all.

dont you think its a bit too early for the RS to come out?

between the 1st gen to 2nd gen RS, we had to wait 8 years for it,
between the 2nd to 3rd gen we had wait 5 years for it,
now for the 3rd to 4th gen, the wait is only 2 years?
so according to my calculations, the 5th gen will come out 6 months after the 4th gen comes out?

Totally pointless to fit so much horsepower into a hot hatch. Whats the point of competing with other models

Totally agree with u,also it cant neither handle nor utilize all that power and besides a hatch needs to be lightweight

Jesus Christ what’s happened to the world? A hatchback with comparable times to a Ferrari F40?

I guess they no longer target the youngsters.
You have to be at least nearly middle-age and successful to be afford these “fun” cars so that people will look at you like you’re having a mid-life crisis?

The end of the Focus as a Hot Hatch really, once they go over £26k really they’re past the hot hatch market.

The current proper hot hatches are the Fiesta ST , Polo GTI , Ibiza Cupra, Clio RS and I’d take them over the Focus RS because they’re still hot hatches, the Focus RS is a hyper hatch

So that’s how they’re going to do it. I was talking to my uncle a couple years ago about the Focus RS. He said they were trying to beat the RS3 and some other cars on the Nurburgring.
