Michelle Rodriguez Could Quit Fast And Furious Over Its Portrayal Of Women

Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez has taken to Instagram to issue what appeared to be a threat to quit the franchise, if it doesn’t change the way it portrays women.

“I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise,” she said, posting on the day of Fate of the Furious’ digital release.

It’s not the first time she’s spoken out about the male-dominated world of Fast and Furious, telling Entertainment Weekly last month: “it seems like we’ve been stuck in the ’90s for the last [however] many years that we’ve been doing the franchise, because of the macho bravado involved, but that truly is the voice of the urban ghetto. I was hoping that at some point we’d evolve out of that vibe”.

Fast 8 director F Gary Gray has since responded to the star’s Instagram post. Speaking to Business Insider, he said: “I thought there was a strong representation of women in the movie [Fate of the Furious] when you bring on what I thought was one of the strongest antagonists in Charlize Theron. And then you have Helen Mirren, who has a cameo that’s strong”.

Fate of the Furious ended up grossing $1.238 billion at the box office. It’s currently the second highest grossing film of 2017, and set the record for the highest grossing opening of all time. The next installment in the franchise will be out on 19 April 2019.

Fast and furious has had some of the strongest female characters of any franchise. Especially in the more recent ones. The main villian was a female in fast 8 which shows women can be incharge, furious 7 had a female hacker which showed that women can be good with computers and stuff, also Ronda Rousey was the head of security. Michelles character Letty has always been a strong female character. While maybe not as much in the first movies starting in the 4th she showed how bad ass she can be, especially in f&f 6. Gal Gadots character was always, again, a very strong female character she kicked ass and was a good driver as well. In 2 fast 2 furious the girl with the pink car (don’t remember her name) came in second behind PW in the first race. I can see where she is coming from, you just have to watch any of the car meet scenes to see how women are treated like objects but its not fair to say all women are depicted like that through out the series

So…Charlize Theron, Gal Gadot, Jordana Brewster, and many other names are non existent in Rodriguez’s eyes?

How is the franchise remotely about cars anymore ?? Unless you’re talking about the robbery-enthusiasts community ?

Then Vin ought to ask for quits too because F&F portrays all men as total badasses and doesn’t represent the non badass part of male society.

Besides, all the main female leads in F&F are independent and badass in their own rights. Just because a few things are present doesn’t infringe on women’s rights.

Women need to get over it you don’t see us guys complaining about your girly shows where you get a new man ever episode if anyone should have a problem in today’s world it should be the men we are the ones that get the short end of the stick with everything think about it even simple things like a women can adjust her bra no one cares but if a man unoinches his underwear everyone gets butt hurt well this is my opinion just keep in mind I have respect for women I just don’t see why they have to be a stinker about stuff like this I mean two of the main characters are women and its not like its demoting as they are just as good or even better drivers then the men in this movie and they are giving them bigger roles as the franchise goes on
