Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG Kompressor "Edition 79" Special

Of course this is coming out at the Dubai Auto Show. Who else would have the desire for a Benz G-Wagen tricked out like this? I have a soft spot for the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen. They are sort of what and SUV should be: Big, square, ungainly, great off road. Of course that was then, and this is now, and now means you have to add creature comforts. A lot of them, it would seem.

This Dubai Show G-Wagen is officially called the G55 AMG KOMPRESSOR "Edition 79". That would be in reference to the fact that Mercedes started selling these guys to the public in 1979. Naturally, this is a limited edition, so Merc will make only 70 of them. Which is odd, because you'd think making 79 of them would have been a better idea.

And what makes the "Edition 79" so special? For starters, there's the "designo magno alanite grey" matt paint finish. Not normally available on the G-Class, "designo magno alanite grey" paint is a shade normally found on the SLS AMG. It looks nice, even if the name is really contrived.

Other nifty add-ons are a crash bar at the front. There are also carbon-look side trim strips, which are both annoying, and are also "carbon-look". Don't be such a bunch of cheapskates Mercedes. There's also 19-inch AMG rims in titanium finish, because you can't have a custom SUV without huge rims, now can you?

And there's more off road type stuff for a ride that will never leave the tarmac. There are chromed protective grilles for the front indicators, taillights and the underguard (which I think they mean is the skidplate). It's nice of them to add that stuff and chrome it, but you know, it'll make you look so rugged in the mall parking lot.

And on the inside? There are two-tone designo leather seats, which are a nice touch. There's acres of carbon-fiber trim and, of course the Edition logo "1 out of 79" right in front of the gear lever, so every time you look down, you can remember just what a special and unique snowflake you are.
