Leaked Document Claims 2020 Ford Mustang GT500 Will Have 710bhp

With the reveal of the new Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 still some time off, all we have to go on right now is the odd rumour and occasional spy shot. So, when we found out about leaked document posted by the Mustang 6G forum, our interest was immediately piqued.

Certainly the power and torque figures on the purported engineering document - which can be seen here - are in line with expectations. Ford has previously said the 2020 GT500 will have over 700 horses to play with, and here we have 720hp (710bhp) listed.

But the more you read, the more suspect this document sounds. First off there’s the kerb weight - it’s down 1916kg. Could the GT500 really be over 170kg porkier than the standard GT?

Then there are bizarre spelling mistakes like “trailor” and “patrol” rather than ‘petrol’ that raise eyebrows further. The power is also listed in ‘HP’ in a box which is supposed to be for the output figure in kW.

The spreadsheet claims the car will be powered by a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 (one of the few things we can be fairly sure of), which apparently develops its peak power at its 7500rpm redline. Peak torque of 650lb ft meanwhile supposedly arrives at 4500.

Unsurprisingly, Ford declined to comment when contacted by Road & Track. We’ll have to wait and see just how legitimate this document is.

Am I the only one who feels that this should be a Reincarnation of the Terminator cobra. It would be an awesome throwback

It wouldn’t surprise me at all. Sounds pretty accurate actually.

Car and Driver’s 2016 Lightning Lap showed that the GT-350R was quicker around VIR than both an M2 and a M4 GTS. I understand the M2 was built for a different purpose and it’s a great car but that’s why I also included the M4 GTS. This is a car that’s base price is about $13,000 more than the Mustang and slower by almost 2 seconds.

So it’s gonna weigh as much as a galaxy and still manage to be faster than a hellcat?

I kinda doubt its 710 horsepower considering the N/A version of the engine was revealed to make 580 horsepower. 130 extra horsepower through a supercharger is kinda low, especially since it was also leaked to have a 2.65L blower.

“ In the meantime, a member of the Mustang6G forum has managed to get hold of a few spy photos of the new GT500’s guts, one of which is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with a reported 680 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque” Mustang6G has been wrong before. (This was before reveal trailer of 700+ hp)

So you started arguing that because of track times the mustang was inferior and now that I’ve disputed your claim with evidence you’re trying to back away and suggest car and driver rigged the test to boost American cars? That’s good stuff!

Its overpowered Ford should’ve given the GT500 the GT treatment, a ton of weight saving, about 650 bhp and the GT’s Dual Clutch as an option, the GT350 is still gonna be an all around better car than this
