The Latest Tesla Model S Software Update Will "End Range Anxiety"
Mention the words ‘range’ and ‘anxiety’ in a sentence with ‘Tesla’, and my mind will immediately be cast back to trundling through northern France in a Tesla Model S at about 20mph below the speed limit, fearful of running out of power. Range anxiety was a big theme in our recent London to Paris Tesla road trip, and is probably the biggest issue facing electric vehicles right now. But, using Twitter - seemingly his favourite platform for dropping Tesla-related bombshells - CEO Elon Musk has revealed that the latest over-the-air software update for the whole Tesla Model S fleet will “end range anxiety”.
The fact that it’s a software update - ruling out any physical battery upgrades or Supercharger network additions - makes it difficult to even speculate as to how exactly the company plans to end the dreaded range anxiety. Previous OTA updates have increased range, but only by small amounts.
When it’s time for the press conference on Thursday at 9am (no information has yet been given regarding what time zone is being referred to), we’ll be all ears. What do you think the update might be?
