Just 20 examples of Volvo’s new 415bhp S60 T8 Polestar Engineered have been confirmed for the USA, and if you want one, you’d better be quick.

The brisk mid-sized saloon is dipping a toe into the American market via an all-inclusive subscription, similar to the scheme put in place for the Polestar 1. It’s basically a lease that includes all your added extras like maintenance and insurance.

A very small metaphorical order book will open today at 12pm US Eastern Time, with a non-negotiable price tag of $1100 per month. Ouch. That’s plus any local taxes and registration fees. Double-ouch. Interestingly, subscribers will do the deal through the Care by Volvo app, rather than over the phone or in person.

For reference, the purchase price of a top-spec non-Polestar Engineered S60 T8 is $55,400, plus a $995 destination charge and the usual running costs.

The 20 rich patrons who take the plunge on subscription will get a very nice piece of kit to play with. Along with 415bhp there’s a healthy 494lb ft of torque courtesy of a hybrid drivetrain based around a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. It’s a plug-in hybrid with a large battery, so despite roughly the same mass as the Death Star it can trundle around using its electrified rear axle for as much as 28 miles.

Polestar Engineered isn’t just a badge exercise. This version of the T8 gets Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes with gold calipers (+10hp) behind model-specific 19-inch forged alloys, all topped-off by a front strut brace. Oh, and let’s not forget the gold seat belts.

The Care by Volvo app will also allow for subscriptions to the S60 T6 Momentum and T6 R-Design.

That’s very stupid. Why make this a limited production car? People want this car. Many people want this car. Everybody’s tired of the M3, C63, RS4/5 because they have been around forever.
Sure, we have the Giulia, Ghibli, and the XE, but still, it would be better if people had more choices.

People do want this car. But the ones that could actually afford it will most likely go for one of the Germans because those names carry more weight to them

People are very much not tired of the German triumvirat in the premium cars segment. Why do you think the Giulia did badly on sales ?

Amazing… In the market with more money to buy cars they won’t sell it.

I mean i get the point of people buying and selling a car in like 3 years ownership, that would probably make sense, but americans like to own things, especially this type of cars, so they can compare to their neighbors

You could probably buy an 740/960 turbo EVERY MONTH for that price… Way better
