Despite briefly owning a Merc SLK - which she claimed she couldn't use because it was nothing like her old Ford Ka - recently appointed coach for The Voice UK, Jessie J, took the opportunity to reveal Mercedes' Concept Style Coupe at the Beijing Motor Show today. Turns out heated seats, an indicator that soaks people by accident and the 'far too complicated' Command system are just too much to take in for Jessie.
What she revealed was one very unique and 'rebellious' Benz. The CSC is a compact executive four-door coupe designed for a special person that has always wanted the bigger CLS four-door coupe but doesn't have the bankroll to match. This semi-skimmed version is the better-looking contender though in our eyes.
Even though it shares the same platform and some design cues (such as the fantastic diamond grille) with the new A Class hatchback, the compact coupe is longer, wider and lower than the C Class saloon. Unique touches include striking front and rear lights, thin and aerodynamic wing mirrors and those awesome 21-inch alloys, but they will probably be changed come production time. Police officers aren't fans of civilian cars with blue lights, so we'll have to see how this goes down on the streets.
Inside, there are only four seats instead of the usual five since the centre console flows all the way from the front to the back. This plus the SLS-like air vents that glow from blue to yellow and then red, depending on how hot they are, are thus the only big differences to the interior compared to the A Class. Not a bad thing as the interior looks like it would be a very nice place to sit.
Under the skin lies a 2.0 turbo petrol that produces up to 211bhp through all four wheels. Teamed with a 7 speed dual clutch gearbox, it should go from 0-60mph in about 7 seconds and on to a top speed of 150mph. Chances are there will be more engines available when released but there haven't been any details released just yet.
The A Class, B Class MPV and this CSC won't be the only cars on this platform, with an A Class Shooting Brake and a Range Rover Evoque rival apparently being planned.
The finished version, which they say will be called the 'CLA' should be hitting showrooms by 2014 with prices starting from £25,000, similar to the Audi A5 Sportback and more expensive than the Volkswagen CC. However, this looks way cooler than both. Mercedes boss, Dieter Zetsche said to Autocar, "I promise the production version will do justice to this concept version". We can't wait to see it.
Will Jessie herself get one when it's released? It's still probably not as simple as her old Ford Ka, but in today's world of celebrity endorsements, you just never know.
