Hello CT. My name is Richard Porter and I was the script editor on Top Gear. Ask me anything.

After working on the show for 13 years, 22 series and 175 programmes, there’s quite a lot I can tell you about Top Gear. I know whose idea it was to get a dog, I was there when we got threatened by drug barons in Bolivia, I can give you the real story of that Porsche number plate.

I’ve put all these things in my new book, but you can ask me about them anyway. Or something else. Up to you. I’m here all night. Try the soup in a basket.

How would you get cars from car makers would you buy them or did they let you “borrow them” and if I may why is it Ferrari never lets people put there cars on t.v.?

I know i’m not Richard, but I know that manufacturers have several press cars for a certain model. These cars then get passed around to all of the magazines, shows, websites, etc. You basically call up the manufacturer’s PR department and say “Hello, i’m __ for BBC’s Top Gear, would you mind awfully sending a Jag F type ‘round sometime?” “Certainly sir, we’ll send one over next Tuesday.” or more commonly… “Certainly sir, we’ll send one over next March.”

I don’t know if the cars then get sold as used cars or kept by the manufacturer or whatever, but that’s basically the process.

also, afaik, Ferrari only lets reviewers drive their cars if it’s Ferrari’s own car that they supply and tune on the day. They don’t take kindly to private owners supplying TV shows with their cars, and tend to ban them from buying future Ferrari’s, so good on ya there for helping your brand image.
