Despite Mass Criticism, The First Episode Of ‘New’ Top Gear Was Officially A Hit

It’s pretty clear from the reactions on our live discussion that most of you guys didn’t really take to the first episode of new Top Gear. In fact, the poll we ran yesterday revealed that a whopping 24 per cent of you scored the episode as a 1 out of 10…

Twitter seemed full to the brim with complaints, too, while reviews have been less than favourable. However, in terms of raw numbers, the first episode was actually a hit.

In a series of Tweets, host Chris Evans revealed that the show enjoyed a massive 23 per cent audience share, representing a 12 per cent increase on the first episode of series 22 when the show was still presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

The caveat here is that the intrigue surrounding just what the show would be like in the post-Clarkson era will have no doubt fuelled the apparent popularity; the acid test will be the figures for the second and third episodes. However, it seems people weren’t switching off, because the audience actually grew throughout the airing. Evans also revealed this morning that iPlayer views have topped one million.

I watched the first episode last night they added a rally track to the top gear test track and they put guns on corvettes and Vipers. You cant tell me there not trying to pull in numbers. Plus they tried to carry the tourch with the relient robin. Its just try hard all around

Errrrrr…. That’s because the first episode is where we give you that chance Evans, and you messed it up. FACT. He’s ignorant of the truth. Don’t think the Top Gear series is going to get any better when you have FACTMan not realising his mistakes.

First episode was always going to be a ‘hit’ due to people’s curiousity … I imagine ratings will now start to drop

Example of the logic chris evans used: Some time ago a german bloke put together a certain type of ppl, more then 10.000.000 to be correct .FACT. That obviously means they enjoyed it. Well chris, did they? Just because alot off ppl witnessed it doesnt mean they had fun.

Evans is that rich neighbor who has all the nice cars… but is a +wa+. Nobody would wanna talk cars with someone like him unless they’re a bigger +wa+.

Honestly if they changed the format people would still be shocked with change but they’d at least be more open to embrace it. Harris and Reid are the perfect lead for this change.

But if they insist in keeping the old with the new here’s my suggestion

The show only got that audience increase, cause people wanted to see if you could pull it off! FACT!
It’s still number one on i-player, cause lots of people that didn’t see it on tv, want to see if it’s worth it. FACT!
New Top Gear is like a tribute band. It will never have the glory the original had! FACT!
The Grand Tour will be more successful than the bbc could ever dream of. FACT!

FACTS all over Cris Evans’s face!
