But they only have one gear right?

The Detroit Electric SP:01 has the same manual as the Lotus Elise it’s based on.

That would raise the top speed quite a bit, even a 2 speed on a tesla woul make a big difference

Might also increase range when cruising along

Better have a tachometer, no way you’d be able to gauge the revs by ear

They will probably design it, so that the 1st gear is not fatal at top speed and that the revs are automatically matched when shifting to avoid the need for a clutch

Wish they’d start selling kits that turn old classic cars into electric cars so we’d have stunning looking cars running on electricity.. More power and more efficiency. + 0 gas mileage.
But the only thing hindering this is the fact that we’d have to fill the classic car with 1 tonne of batteries.

Either design a small battery that can hold impossible amounts of charge or extremely effective solar panels that can make electricity stupidly fast.

Engineers, please keep scratching your heads. We need that black magic to happen.

No.

These are the cars you wouldn’t want to do this to. Give electric cars to the general population instead. Way better impact on the environment.

Anybody else thinking that CVT would be great with an electric motor ?
Any RPM at any speed.

Even better would be like now. Simply no gearbox.

I hope manufacturers still care about our little bunch of enthusiasts in the future. We all anticipate the day the manual will die, but this gives me hope.

manufactures will always care as long as laws allow it, but the thing to worry about is when self driving cars come around.

This is great and all but how will you hear the “engine” note to know when you have to change gear

That’s part of the point… You never really “need” to shift. That being said, they can do like electric rc cars and add artificial engine noise via speakers/sub.

If u want to shift some thing stuff the gear box just change the number of poles on the motor or if multiple motors from series to parallel.

This would open the market for a lot of car guys that still want control of their car. Hope this happens!
