Alfa Romeo's New GTV And 8C Have Been Canned, Bigger Saloon Won't Happen Either

FCA's CEO has confirmed that Alfa Romeo's future portfolio will be "significantly scaled back," resulting in the cancellation of several much-anticipated models

We couldn’t quite believe our luck. With Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited rear-wheel drive-based rebirth having already giving the world the 503bhp Giulia Quadrifoglio, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed 18 months ago that it would build successors for both the GTV and 8C. What a time to be alive.

It wasn’t to be, however. During a Q3 earnings call with investors, FCA CEO Mike Manley laid out plans that will see the reinvention of Alfa Romeo take a more modest path. According to Motor Trend, Manley said: “In the near term, the new portfolio for the brand is significantly scaled back with a corresponding reduction in capital spending”.

This “scaled back” approach will see the Giulia and Stelvio live on and two crossovers - one of them most likely being the production Tonale - join the ranks, but beyond that, the news is grim. Both the GTV and the 8C look to be for the chop, and the much-touted larger saloon that was due to sit above the Giulia won’t happen either.

As a reminder of why this would have been such a shame, we only have to look at what FCA was promising the world. The GTV was to be a 600bhp all-wheel drive hybrid with space for four people inside a no doubt stunning coupe body. The 8C meanwhile would have been a mid-engined supercar built on a carbonfibre monocoque, with a target power output in excess of 700bhp.

If you don’t mind, we’ll be finding a quiet corner in which to sob. Press F, everybody. Press F.

For what I could find, FCA is going to cut on Alfa, but it’s going to invest a lot in Maserati to refresh the lineup (except the Quattroporte), with a new Granturismo, a new Grancabrio, a new 4C-based V6-powered car, a new Levante and a smaller SUV, and maybe some electric stuff too
