4 Things That Made The Latest Grand Tour Episode The Best Yet

With an spectacular road trip at its core, the latest Grand Tour episode was damn impressive

Much to the anger of the entire Internet, I’ve had pretty mixed feelings about The Grand Tour so far. For various reasons the first episode didn’t grab me like I expected it to, and the second episode…well, that was just a bit daft.

But episode three? Hot damn, that was the Grand Tour I’ve been waiting for. Here’s what made it brilliant:

1. The road trip

I’d argue the best bits of the Clarkson, Hammond and May era of Top Gear were the big road trips, and Grand Tour ep three had one hell of a road trip at its core. Three very different cars - an Aston Martin DB11, Rolls-Royce Dawn and Dodge Challenger Hellcat - some stunning visuals, loads of engine noise and great humour. Exactly what we want to see from those three.

2. Conversation Street was genuinely funny

So far we’ve had the sense that the trio aren’t yet entirely comfortable in their new studio environment, but in episode three everything felt a lot more natural, and the banter was spot on. Particularly in conversation street, which was genuinely funny. Even if Hammond’s anti-Nissan Juke face will give me nightmares.

3. No American

Judging by the comments we’ve had so far, TGT’s unfunny Stig replacement - The American - has been poorly received for the most part. So we certainly didn’t complain about having a break from him this week…

4. An explosive finale

If you cast your mind back a few months, you might remember Jeremy Clarkson was reported to have demolished his house to make way for a new, larger property. Using explosives. As we expected when the ‘bet’ about the Holy Trinity was made during episode one, the demolition was something that’d been cleverly woven into the series.

So, the episode ended on an actual bombshell. Top work.

Personally I think Clarkson made the best choice in car for the Grand Tour. That DB11 is borderline X rated beauty.

Matt Robinson - Simon Pegg eating a Cornetto doesn’t make it a top 5?

C’mon man… that was a small yet perfectly placed stroke of genius!
