The 164mph VW Golf GTI TCR Is The Clubsport Successor We've Been Waiting For

There’s a new top dog coming to the Golf GTI range, and it looks extremely promising. It’s called the Golf GTI TCR - riffing off the customer racing car of the same name - and its 2.0-litre inline-four will shove 286bhp to the front wheels only via VW Group’s ‘VAQ’ electronic locking differential.

Sound familiar? That’s because the spec mirrors that of the Golf GTI Clubsport - albeit with the 286bhp output made constantly, and not as part of an overboost feature. The Clubsport was the Golf GTI’s 40th-anniversary special, so we weren’t expecting a successor to arrive before the Mk7 Golf is replaced. Until recent rumours suggested otherwise, however, and now we’re here.

Unlike the Clubsport, the TCR won’t necessarily be held back by a 155mph electronic limiter. If you want, you’ll be able to remove the buffers entirely, giving a 164mph top speed.

The press release only mentions a standard-fit DSG automatic gearbox, and from what VW UK tells us, there probably won’t be a manual. We won’t know for sure until final specs are confirmed, so keep your fingers crossed.

The car will be revealed in full at the huge Worthersee GTI Treffen meet on 9 May, ahead of a launch nearer the end of 2018.

Does it have a VR6?

No, vr6 would make more power

That would massively hurt handling and make the weight distribution even worse

It literally says it in the article that it will have a 2.0 litre inline-4.

Just a new set of wheels and a new setup made on the nurburgring from the clubsport i guess? Is it really developping it if you don’t change it? I mean it could have been named the clubsport mk2

It better will be available with a manual, otherwise it’s not really a GTI. Not being one of those manual kids, but it’s a GTI, it’s sort of the law. But the R has it so I got hope.

That’s why I’m so disappointed with the latest Polo GTI, only available with the DSG gearbox…

I remember the time when there was only one GTI, and it was THE GTI.

The GTI has always been competitive. Just not for raw performance - that’s what the R is for.

Damn, that is impressive.But…….wait for it……..where is the f###ing manual mot#########g option to the f######g GTI !!! To be serious, there really should be a manual option,I know that your farting DSG is fast but maybe, just maybe some people would like to buy a hothatch to actually have fun with changing the gears.Again,I know it is fast but I would rather slap the knob than tick my paddle
