MX-5 NA vs NB
Hello guys,
I want to buy MX-5, and I have an opportunity to buy (or to choose) from 2 in very good conditions, with low mileage. One is NA (mk1) another is NB (mk2). I know, of course, that there are difference in look and design, but what about driving characteristics? Which is more fun to drive, or “better” to drive?
Thanks a lot for all answers.
Cheers

This isn’t exactly the same but some of the comments might help
NA
On looks I would choose the NA. But they both suffer from rust so I would go for what every in better condition
Go for the mk1 because pop-up headlights
NA is more ‘raw’ to drive and you get flippity lights. Which are the greatest thing on a car, ever.
NB has more space (a big complaint with Miatas) and the lights could freeze shut if you live somewhere cold on an NA, I recommend getting the NB, both me and my dad like the handling of my NB compared to my grandmother’s NA. I am NB 100%
The NA is lighter and more direct, but the NB has slightly more power and a stiffer chassis.

Have you been watching regular car reviews again? :)
While I own an NB as my first Miata. Since I’ve never actually driven an NA, I don’t know what to recommend, other than to drive them both, carefully look over each one, inspect for rust (very important) and see what you like about them.
So I have two things I would recommend.
#1. Choose the one that has the least amount of rust (this way you avoid the mistake I made when I bought my Miata.)
#2. Go with the one that makes you smile the most!!!
NA, because pop-up headlights, and you are to go with the 1.6 it’s more powerful (6HP), and since the 1.6 in general is better (lighter, more economical, etc.) It’s up to you.
The 1.6L makes 15bhp less than the 1.8L. The 1.8L also has bigger brakes, beefier driveshafts, extra bracing and the option of an LSD. Other than that the car is mechanically identical, so it weighs the same.
