2jz vs m50

So next year I’m going to buy a rwd car with the intent of drifting.
I am planning on getting an e30 but am also debating an e36 or e34.

I am not too keen on the stock engine in the e30. I would like something more powerful.

I love the 2jz but i don’t think its very economical to swap into an e30. Keep in mind I’m in Australia. and 2jz’s are very expensive, not to mention all the other stuff required to make it work.

So I think the m50 bmw engine would be a much more cost effective. Even though I want to turbo it.

What are your thoughts on this?
Cost is priority.
I am aiming for about 400hp to being with and maybe 600+ in the future.

Thanks, CTzens

Well, I’ve driven E30’s with an M50B25, M52B28 and an M30B35. So I will say this - all of them STOCK are way more than the chassis can effectively put down. Anything over 300 torque and 200hp will see you wheelspinning in 3rd like a madman. Having a turbo on that will only make it less controllable and less enjoyable. I would just slot in the M30B35 to get that massive torque all the way through the revs and enjoy the muscle feel. M50 tends to feel more like a racecar. If you want a turbo engine and 400+ hp then E34 is a better bet, since the M30 3.5 unit can take up to a kilo of boost from a t3/t4 turbo without any real mods (gasket, arp studs, injectors, pump). That would bring you towards 500ish horses without much trouble. Also an E36 can fairly easy achieve 500hp number on the M50B25 block with minor mods to it, but also, chassis is not ready to handle ths power. 500 horses spin slicks in 3rd, and semi slicks in 4th without much hassle.

Get the m50 into an e30 and you’ll have a good car. Give it some N/A performance mods to get the power up to 250-260hp and you’ll get a monster of a car.

Actually recently I was looking at the m30, only thing that turned me off was age.

So you reckon the m50 into an e30 will make a decent drift car?
