1998 TVR Chimaera 450

A proper old-school lairy sportscar. No ABS, no traction control, no power steering, just a well set up chassis (so long as you’re not in the wet!) and a big, sonorous V8. Always an occasion to drive, it’s as quick as you’d expect from a car that is so light with a 4.6 V8 up front, and with sleeved exhausts it sounds like Satan standing on a lego brick when you put your foot down. It’s surprisingly comfortable, and even has a decent sized boot. My 2 1.2 year old son loves ‘Daddies loud car’ and is always pestering to go out in it - he also helps me work on it. This year I’ve had the rad refurbed, replaced all the cooling hoses, had the wiper motor refurbished, sorted out some wiring, and hopefully over the winter I’ll be moving the battery from the passenger footwell into the boot to free up some leg room, and to allow me to tidy up all the wiring and the fuse box that lives down there. I’ve also (hopefully) sealed up all the leaks so the interior might stop smelling of wet dog soon! The car is a bit scruffy at the moment, I need to get the chassis inspected as they are known to rust on these cars. It then needs a new hood, and either a respray or maybe I’ll have a go a Plasti-Dipping it. Finally, once I’m sure all the leaks are definitely fixed I’ll have new carpets fitted. I’m also hoping to re-veneer the dash with some exotic wood veneer I’ve picked up. Lots of jobs to do, but as these cars are so simple they are very easy and incredibly rewarding to work on.

How much did you pay for it?

It might be a bit of a controversial choice but I actually did a straight swap for my RS6 (C5). I wanted something less complicated, cheaper to run, and more engaging to drive. There are times I miss the Audi, but never when I’m in the TVR! :)
