9 Weird Vehicles From India. #BlogPost
There are certain outlandish vehicles you can see no where else but India.
Here are a few of them.
Tempo Hanseat
1) Tempo Hanseat
The Hanseat is what you would come across if you have traveled throughout India, especially the rural areas. It is used as a goods & people mover. It was built by Force Motors (earlier Bajaj Tempo). It has only a single wheel up front. It is powered by a two cylinder 452 cc two stroke petrol engine mounted above the front wheel. It produces 20 Bhp. It was first introduced in the 1960’s, but continues to be seen on Indian roads even now.
Hindustan Trekker
2)Hindustan Trekker
The Trekker is a unique product which has been designed by Hindustan Motors. What they intended to do with this product was to build a people carrier with the spare parts they had left over from the Hindustan Ambassador. The Trekker has a ladder frame chassis. The engine, lights, steering & suspension was borrowed from the Ambassador. It had a 1.5 liter engine and a 4 speed manual transmission which was floor mounted.
Hindustan Veer
3)Hindustan Veer
Hindustan Motors tried doing a comeback with the Veer, which was essentially a pick-up version of the very famous Ambassador. The vehicle was first introduced in their largest market, West Bengal and then spread across the country. This model marks the revival of the older Porter pickup truck which was on sale in the 1980’s.
Sipani Badal
4)Sipani Badal
The Badal (cloud in Hindi) is one of the weirdest cars India has built. It was based on the Reliant Robin which was sold in the UK market. The vehicle was introduced in the 1970’s. It had a fiber glass body. Powering it is a 198 cc two stroke petrol engine that only powered the rear wheels. Only the rear wheels had brakes where as the front wheel was only used for steering.
Tata Spacio
5)Tata Spacio
The Spacio is the soft top version of the Tata Sumo. This is a more people carrier oriented vehicle as it has better accessibility. It is still being used by the Indian Police in some places.
Mahindra Gio
6)Mahindra Gio
The Mahindra Gio is a commercial vehicle which can be bought for multiple purposes. It can be had as a compact truck or even a 6-seater compact people mover. Having 4 wheels rather than 3, it is much better than an autorickshaw. It is powered by a 442 cc single cylinder direct injection diesel engine making 9 Bhp & 21.5 Nm. The engine comes mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.
Jugaad
7)Jugaad
Jugaad means improvisation. With affordable mobility in India not reaching the rural areas, they had to resort to creating their own people movers. Each state has their own iteration of this. This is known as the “Chhakda” in most parts of the countries & is mainly used to haul loads as well as people. These mainly ran on old motorcycle engines
E-rickshaws
8)E-rickshaws
The current trend given the high levels of pollution is of E-rickshaws. These are mainly people carriers that are used for short distance commute. In Delhi, they are mainly used to commute between the metro station & popular locations.
6 seaters
9)6 seaters
In places where public transport doesn’t exist (that’s a long list of places), the 6 seater rickshaws provide for last mile connectivity. These vehicle are still in use in large scale in the commercial market, mainly as either a goods carrier or a people mover. They’re not just unsafe for their passengers, but are also driven rashly.
