Supra MkIV vs MKIII

Differences

The Mk3 and Mk4 supras where to iconic Japanese 20th century sports cars. They are admired by most of the cars communities around the world, as they provide good power and looks with easy power gains with small modifications. They both are heroes in the car world have a different following due to the age of these cars and also the looks, so they may be brother but they aint twin brothers (or sisters). And some favor the pop up lights and some the normal lights on the supra.

The MK3 // MKIII

For the MK3 supras there where many different options, engine wise but the most iconic are the 2.0 L (1988 cc) 1G-GTE I6 and 2.5 L (2491 cc) 1JZ-GTE I6 which provide a naughty engine note with an after market exhaust. For me personally they dont seem to get the love they deserve, i believe the reason for this is because the modifications are not that available, some may disagree and say many body kits are available but from my research there doesnt seem to be many(UK). Also because the stock look does have road presence. The interior for a MK3 isn’t as driver orientated like the MK4 but this still provide a good feel for a long drive and it doesnt feel cheap or nasty. Depending on what model you buy it can range from fabric seats to leather seats but what most tuners (or ricers) do is swap out the seats for a more desirable bucket seat.

The MK4 // MKIV

The MK4 supra has more of a following because of it’s more desirable engine, 3.0 L (2997 cc) 2JZ-GE I6 — 3.0 L (2997 cc) 2JZ-GTE I6. These engines are more desired because of the more power they produce along with the available mods that come with this engine. The car its self also provides more tuning and modification because it was the more popular car than its old brother, i think it is more popular because it was the last version of supras until they announced a MK5 resonantly. The interior on the MK4 is more to be desired for (for some) because it is designed around the drive and all dials and switches are curved for easy of use. This is helpful whilst speeding down a roa….. i mean track.

Costs

The supra can be costly altogether because they are an appreciated classic. For going out and purchasing one the MK3 is by far cheaper to buy and slightly cheaper on insurance too. As in the UK you can buy a good MK3 for around 2k but to buy a good NON Turbo MK4 its around 5k but to get the twin turbo model your looking at selling your life for 15K. Also the insurance on MK4’s are higher because they do push more power out of that 3L engine. But if you want a project MK4 supra’s you can get them from the show spec age and making them your own, but you will have to argue with the seller to get that price down.

Fuel wise they are around the same in MPG and it just depends on local fuel costs. But when your hitting the red line and popping flames from your exhaust costs go out the window, cause who cares as long as your having from (and obviously not breaking the law).

What Would i have?

For me i would have a MK4 truely because i think its a thing of beauty and i also love the engine note the 2j pops out. Yes i realise you can put a 2j into a MK3 but there is something about these cars that no-one can take away. What car would you have MK3 or the younger brother MK4?

Just remember :

JDM Scene, Euro Scene, Muscle Car scene ... We may all be different but in many ways we are all the same.
